Atticus with the 'Erm, actually...' locked and loaded only for Garlant to know exactly what he was going to say, haha. Garlant is a good man, but a spiteful one. We find it funny how Midura keeps the old relationships alive with the Falkes against Garlant's wishes. We hope this makes Garlant's expressions and attitude back when the families first interacted in the comic at the airship races make more sense now. He had to drink a lot to get through that backstory, haha, and it's showing in his cheeks.

Kailey: Young Garlant! Surprised me with that one! Fun how you come up with such great visual storytelling to go with the scripts. That was not a flashback scene I was expecting, but I'm so happy to see it!

Hannah: We'd already planned a flashback panel showing young Thaddeus, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show Garlant's roots, tinkering in his family's barn. All genius inventors have to start somewhere!

Kailey: It's really cool. A flashback for us, and getting a bit of a look into Garlant's head. He's getting nostalgic with those drinks and the son of his old business partner in the room.

Hannah: Drink number three is bringing back a lot of mixed feelings.

We went back and forth on the design of Garlant's device, but we're happy with how the final version turned out; steampunky and a little more advanced than other tech we've seen so far. Turns out he and Atticus have something in common in how they tackle challenges. We're excited to get into some backstory lore in this conversation that didn't come into our original rp until much, much later!

Hannah: I know Garlant and Atticus are having a serious conversation, but I keep getting distracted by how cute the robot birb is in panel three.

Kailey: It steals the show. Good thing it's only the one panel.

Hannah: I bet if Claire were in this little meeting she'd be distracted too.

Kailey: If Claire was in this little meeting, while Garlant is distracted by terrible news and Atticus's upcoming demonstration, she would kidnap that bird and take it apart to figure out how it works.

Kailey: Love that Garlant's office is really just a personal work room. A public figure and business man, but an engineer at heart.

Hannah: It was an intense page, but it was fun adding little details of his lived-in space! Like the previously used whiskey glasses by his work in progress and the little smiley face of pushpins on the corkboard.

Kailey: Seriously, that first panel's perspective. Surprised me in a good way when I saw it. You really put care into this scene.

Hannah: Heh, thank you. I try to put a little extra effort into the establishing shot when our characters enter a new location! I noticed an interesting parallel with that first panel, too. Its the same angle I used when Cohen shows Claire his 'office'. Maybe its just a coincidence or maybe Atticus is feeling a little trapped. I'll leave that up to our readers interpretation.

Hannah: I love so many things about this page. Claire's sleepy Death Grip on Atticus’s leg, Garlant's expressions, and Adelaide going back to her book the instant people leave the room.

Kailey: Garlant in for the save to help Atticus avoid awkward conversation! Also, love the introduction of Claire's death grip. I remember writing that into her character because she's been alone and left behind, that now she unconsciously grips onto everything to not let it go. Sad, but brings some funny and cute moments.

Hannah: That's... so cute and so tragic. I'd forgotten the psychological reason behind it, and now I want to make Atticus go right back to the couch and be Claire's pillow again.

Kailey: Whoops! Well, gotta remember: He doesn't know that. He's already being a great support by taking care of the big conversation coming up and letting her sleep!

Hannah: Finally, eye contact from the princess! We've been using that book (and strategic camera angles) to hide her face for so long, haha.

Atticus's floating arm trying to deal with Claire is so cute/funny haha. I love the little details you put into the characters even when it's not explicit in the scripts.

Hannah: shakes out wrist aggressively Hey thanks! Totally worth it. Sleepy Claire was absolutely a highlight of this page for me as well. Seems like Atticus is equal parts concerned and enamored that Claire is leaning on him so much.

Kailey: Maybe it'll be a good enough distraction from his supposed adversaries aboard the ship, let alone sitting right across from one. Charmed indeed.

Hannah: Indeed... although, I do have sympathy for Adelaide. I hate it when people interrupt me in the middle of a good book.

Hannah: Yay, Tim's back! Its so great to see him again. Even if it's only for half a page, haha. Midura wasn't kidding when she said he's in a rush to head to the cockpit.

Kailey: He's back, and you were ready to get rid of that top hat as soon as possible haha. Also, can you tell his favorite color is maroon? Matching his ship today and looking classy.

Hannah: Sooo much red on this page. Good thing its my favorite color, too! Lol and yes, I'm so happy that the hat is gone.

Kailey: We're back! I thank the readers for their patience. I really love the dialogue on this page. So many doubts, unexpected company, I can't blame Atticus for his worries.

Hannah: He took a lot of convincing to go to the Garlants for help in the first place, so seeing the princess threw him into an entirely new spiral of suspicion. Poor Claire lol.

Kailey: At least they've got a moment and a private space to compose themselves and check on Atticus's condition. The adrenaline can only get him so far.

Hannah: I always enjoy Claire (kindly) bullying him into taking care of himself. It's great to get back to drawing these two.❤️

CHAPTER 8

This chapter will introduce a few new characters that we've been looking forward to since the very beginning of this story. Atticus and Claire are still on the run from the EITF and Atticus's would-be assassins, but for now believe they'll get a chance to catch their breath.

Hannah: I'm so happy to see Midura again! I had a lot of fun designing her dress. She's caught off guard to run into Atticus and Claire, but its understandable considering the circumstances.

Kailey: Atticus can't take it anymore. It's both funny and sad how he unloads on her, but it also is a good way to show Claire that he trusts her decision to seek the Garlants for aide.

Hannah: He's really throwing all caution to the wind, lol. Poor Midura. I love how she handles her (frequent) unexpected guests so gracefully.

Kailey: Speaking of unexpected guest, I'm so glad we got to sneak a new character teaser before the end of the chapter! Hype to show them off more in the continuing story.

With that, its a wrap on chapter seven! We won't be taking as long of a chapter break as usual, so look for the new chapter cover this month and regular updates after that.

Sorry for how long this page took! Crazy last month of summer for us.

Kailey: One threat apparently pulling back, but is it really? Claire has a big choice with this note. Excited to bring the Garlants back though!

Hannah: Anything Cohen says is suspicious at best, but at least they have some evidence of things calming down for a moment- Dulara actually leaving them alone once she delivered the note.

Kailey: Poor Dulara, she's so confused. And even though she left, the fact that she delivered the note shows that Cohen knows their location even after Jack's risky dodge. Time to fly away!

Hannah: Problems can't fly, so they'll be safe. I'm so excited to see Mr. and Mrs. Garlant again!

Hannah: Remember Dulara? Atticus certainly does, and he doesn't like the memory one bit. I like how Claire is basically hugging Atty in panel three as they turn around.

Kailey: More like, Atticus is hugging her, getting protective. She doesn't even know who this lady is! Good to see Dulara again, and in casual clothes.

Hannah: Her hair was so fun to do! I enjoyed doing all the background characters, too. I snuck in a cameo of the lizardfolk couple from the first chapter.

Kailey: I thought I recognized those colors! And their cute little tail hold. Dulara might be a grumpy one, but I'm glad we get a chance to show that she does have some sense that something weird is going on.

Kailey: Attention is definitely on Jack, for better or for worse. Hope he's a good enough driver to also not get caught, he's got a race to fly that night!

Hannah: I'm sure he'll be able to talk his way out of it even if he does get caught, haha. I shall miss drawing him and his shenanigans.

Kailey: Well, at least his plan is working so far. If the crowd (and the police now) aren't looking at him, they are looking at Garlant handing out the award to our returning cameo all the way from page 18! Rocket boots are the future.

Hannah: As Garlant says, they'll take the people of New Reidle to new heights! I'm so excited to bring him back into the story again.

Hannah: Finally, we've made out of the city to the Festival of the New Age! Our heroes don't have time to appreciate the view, but at least our readers can.

Kailey: And they can because you drew it all! Wow! It's nice to be back to such vibrant colors, but man, your wrist must be killing you. I remember when you sent me the screenshot of the goblin guy on panel two with the caption: 'I'm losing it.'

Hannah: My wrist was/is fine, no worries!

Lol he's so grumpy, I had to highlight him and his glorious mustache. I can almost hear him saying 'A car, here?! Preposterous. The youth have no respect these days.' And its true. Jack has no respect.

Kailey: Glad Jack kept his plan quiet, Atticus would not have approved to this level of antics. Attention will definitely be on Velvet after this stunt.

Kailey: Favorite panel is seven, most definitely. Such a highlight of each of their personalities! Nailed those expressions and poses, and not mention all the cars you drew! I'm so impressed!

Hannah: Thanks! Jack is in his element, Claire is having a blast, and Atticus is about to go into cardiac arrest. I had a ton of fun with the expressions on this page, though I can't pick a favorite between 2, 3, or 4.

Hannah: The dialogue on this page took a lot of reworking, but it was worth it! Our protagonist's minds are spinning with questions and theories (let's be honest, mostly Atty's), so its a good thing Jack is there to bring them back to the present.

Kailey: Lots of conjecture and worries on Atticus's side, and honestly, very reasonable concerns. I'm excited to get into it more in the future, but for now, they need a snap decision and it's good to see some trust towards Claire, even if he doesn't quite fully agree.

Hannah: Now is the time for action, not thinking! It was fun showing Jack getting impatient with his friend's endless worrying too, haha.

Kailey: I swear, Jack is competing for best facial expression on every page, and he's competing against himself.

Kailey: Red is not Atticus's color, but it will do a better job hiding any blood.

Hannah: I imagine it was the only shirt color Jack could find in the employee breakroom, considering the Red Ribbon's color scheme. I love how it makes Atticus look even paler than usual.

Kailey: Certainly better than the old, ruined one. A big red splotch would draw more attention than a solid red one. I also love how Claire points at him in the last panel, lol. Fun body language.

Hannah: Claire's not putting up with a lecture from Atticus, especially after what they all just went through.

Hannah: I'm pretty sure that this page holds the record for most closeups of hands. Last time was page 10, when Claire first helped Atticus with his brace. So much has changed since then!

Kailey: Yeah, I noticed that when I was coloring flats! Had to keep track of whose hands is whose! I think it's really sweet to see Jack and Claire working together. She's not alone this time to help Atticus.

Hannah: We've had lots of Atticus and Claire scenes, a few Atticus and Jack scenes, but now Claire and Jack get to interact with each other without Atticus there (conscious, anyway). It's so fun to write!

Kailey: Gives Jack a chance to get to know Claire a bit more too, especially with her proving those stories they just told him!

Kailey: Honestly, I'm amazed Atticus managed to stay awake that long before the eventual flop.

Hannah: He had to make sure Claire was all right before he passed out. ❤

Kailey: Aw, that makes it cute. Heart can hold on just long enough for that. Also cute that Jack has been specifically taught about Atticus's condition. Glad we can show a touch of how he's entrusted with Atticus as a friend by his family.

Hannah: Definitely! Not that Atticus wants to leave his house much without Jack, anyway. Its a convenient arrangement to keep Atticus safe as well as sparing his pride. Speaking of Jack, I'm very proud of his pose in panel 4! I love getting the chance to show his admirable qualities, not just him being a shameless flirt.

Hannah: I love big booms and I cannot lie.

Kailey: I don't know how to respond to that, haha, so I'll just make my own commentary. The colors and shading for the explosion are nice. Not nice for the characters, but nice to look at for us.

Hannah: Haha, I have more to add than just the reference, but you know I had to do it. I had a ton of fun doing the explosion panel, then the light fading from that angry red to the bluish predawn light as we see the aftermath.

Kailey: And it's not just impressive in the explosion. The body language really sticks out to me: Jack ducking for cover and getting battle damage, Atticus exhausted after the grab and roll to the floor. I can see and feel the weight as Claire questions their safety.

Hannah: Phew, we finally made it through the Atticus rant! Thankfully Jack was able to snap his friend out of it before it got to a dangerous level of panicking. I had fun with all the different expressions on this page. Pretty sure Jack looks the most irritated we've ever seen him in panel two.

Kailey: Sometimes Atticus needs comforting, sometimes he needs a firm explaining to that he's worrying about way too much out of his control. So glad Jack also easily picked up on the new relationship between his buddy and Claire. He kinda called it back when he was teasing Atticus in the garage.

Hannah: Yep! Atticus trusted Claire almost immediately. Who wouldn't? Just look at her adorable face.

Kailey: So adorable! Funny that she fell asleep during their conversation, but so happy she's getting some much needed rest.

Hannah: I like to picture a montage of Atticus and Claire explaining the events of the whole comic to Jack in the first three panels. I was debating between two different versions of this page for a little while, one where its a stylish sepia toned collage of dramatic panels from the adventure so far, but Kailey and I both agreed that showing the closeups of Jack's reactions instead was way more entertaining.

Kailey: Both hilarious and telling. I love Claire lying down in exhaustion at the end. Reliving all of it all over again so Jack can be caught up to speed.

Hannah: The poor girl probably needs a few more beers after all that talking.

Kailey: Nah. Sometimes the best release is just saying it all out loud. Jack's proven to be a good listener in the past, and continues to prove it now. Who knows how much he's internally processing and coping with the info, but he's good at keeping the focus on them for now.

Hannah: I couldn't agree more! She's had a rough few days, so she deserves a chance to relax and have a drink. All three of them.

Kailey: It's definitely not Atticus's scene though, and there's a lot to catch Jack up on, so I understand his perspective as well. A more private location will be good for him to get everything off his chest to his friend, and finally get some relief after a hectic few days.

Kailey: Well, I don't think anyone expected anything less from Jack with all the build up to this place. He sure knows how to 'blend in', whether Atticus appreciates it or not.

Hannah: If Atticus were feeling more comfortable I'm sure he would tell Jack to button up his shirt because he's being indecent again.

Kailey: Is it all right to bring up the note that Zara is his actual girlfriend though, and not just some floozy at the bar? I don't think it ever comes up in scripts and was just a background detail.

Hannah: Yes! She was even name-dropped in chapter six when Atticus called Jack to arrange their meetup, so its safe to say she's not a random woman.

Kailey: Oh yeah, on the phone! I had forgotten haha. It was not just a nickname for Atticus. Jack's really keeping the ruse going! What a pro.

Hannah: What better way to throw the scent off a secret meeting with fugitives than a completely normal date with his girlfriend? 😉

Hannah: Welcome to the Red Ribbon! That first panel took ages. Crowd shots are a great opportunity to show that, regardless of Atticus and Claire's predicament, there's actually a party going on in most parts of New Reidle, and especially in this bar.

Kailey: I really love the change up of scenery. It's been a while since we've gotten to go to such a public place, but makes sense since our protagonists have needed to keep low profiles. I love the contrast of Atticus's attitude of being there compared to Claire's.

Hannah: Haha yeah, he's not having a great time. I love how the accidental bump and someone immediately flirting with Claire align to give him the nastiest expression.

Kailey: It can be taken so many ways, that poor guy, lol. But it's not time to party! Gotta find the one that brought them here! Excited to see Jack again!

Kailey: You've really outdone yourself, Hannah! Even beyond the rain effects, the glows, I look at that hug on the motorcycle, the support while heading inside the club. There's a level of trust being depicted beautifully through the body language.

Hannah: Aw, you're making me blush! I agree, Atticus and Claire are really learning to depend on each other. I wanted the second half of the page to have a very different vibe, and I'm happy with how it turned out!

Kailey: This whole atmosphere is a very different vibe from what we've done so far in the comic. I love the design for the hostess, she's such a sport wearing that out in the rain, haha.

Hannah: It feels great to be back! Its been four months in real life, but I imagine that its been less than ten minutes for Atticus and Claire. I enjoyed all the blushes on this page.

Kailey: Oh gosh, I hate thinking about the time between scenes and actual page releases. Even when we're on task and weekly, it feels so long between story beats that are seconds apart, haha. Your shading is great. So unique compared to the last night time pages. Love the storm clouds.

Hannah: Lighting is one of my favorite parts of coloring! Claire's hair always has the best highlights.

Kailey: So tempted to add a thought bubble to Claire on the final panel: Oh gods, I nearly killed him.

Hannah: lol She looks too happy about that idea. Meanwhile Atticus is like 'worth it'.

Kailey: It's mixed feelings. She's glad she didn't kill him, as well as glad she went for it, haha. Oh, hey! In the original story draft, I think Atticus actually says 'Worth it' before he passes out, lol. Ah, memories. Glad he doesn't pass out this time.

Hannah: The feeling is still very much there, though we've been nicer in this draft, heheh. I think its a fun note to end the chapter on!

Kailey: Very fun. It's been a loooong chapter. And while I look forward to our usual chapter break, I am excited for our return and chance to visit the Red Ribbon with Jack!

Hannah: Now kiss.

Kailey: Haha, seriously? That's what you're going to start me off with? But really, Claire is a spontaneous, emotional person, and we originally had her kiss Atticus earlier, but decided to wait until it had more meaning and felt right. I'm glad we held off and that you agreed when I had my inspiration to put it into this scene.

Hannah: I couldn't help it, heheh. But yes, I'm happy we waited for the kiss! The timing feels right. One of my favorite parts of this page is how Atticus's arms are still out, like he didn't even have time to lower them before Claire leapt forward.

Kailey: It was a fast transition! You've done excellently, like always, but the expressions on this page are seriously top notch. I can see what Claire's gonna do in panel 4. I really look forward to Atticus's reaction on the next page!

Kailey: I love Atticus's face as he's making a discovery! It's such an authentic elation from him after so much tribulation. It's very cute.

Hannah: Heh, I guess its a bad sign that an excited expression on him looks weird to me. The poor guy needed this boost of morale! He's lucky that he has such an attentive audience.

Kailey: It shouldn't look weird! It's like getting to see a bit of the real Atticus peek through in his passions. It also just feels good that he's showing this expression with Claire. I mean, it was only a page or so, but I already missed them being together.

Hannah: It's nice to see her smiling, too! They're both so darn cute.

Hannah: After 50 pages, I get to draw Jack again! Its been an eventful afternoon since we saw him in Atticus's hospital room.

Kailey: Oh gosh, I forgot that he saw Jack only that morning. I was wondering why you asked me to color him in the same red shirt and it just hit me.

Hannah: Haha, yeah, its only been 7-ish hours in comic time, so I didn't think he'd change outfits. I'm excited to show what Jack's been up to during that time when they see him in person!

Kailey: Love the awkwardness, it's funny, but also a good chance for Atticus to be reminded of the reason alchemy is so restricted and looked at superstitiously from the outside.

Hannah: And he was so ready to make friends in that first panel, too.

Kailey: He is making friends! Joson trusts him, he said so. Just not alchemy, haha. I also finally got the chance to more significantly show a part of why Joson cares for Claire so much. Very much like another daughter to him.

Hannah: It's a big leap of faith for Joson to trust an alchemist. Of course, right now he doesn't have much of a choice.

Hannah: Out of the cellar at last! Judging by how fast Claire ran off, she'd gotten a little impatient from all the sitting around. Like Joson says, she's no good at waiting.

Kailey: Also, a new vehicle for her to drive. Claire doesn't have a car or motorcycle of her own. It's a bright spot for her during these rough events.

Hannah: Haha, true. I love the fourth panel with the two guys left behind while she dashes off. She's all about that vroom.

Kailey: It's cute to see her so excited. She needs the mental break to admire motorcycles and pick the one Joson probably doesn't want her to. It's also good, because it gives Joson a chance to speak to Atticus alone without the pressure of backstories and EITF.

Kailey: Sorry for the delay on this page, but I hope it was worth the wait! Certainly was for me! Beyond needing some time to refresh the scripts and thumbnails, Hannah, you went and made the effects on this page freaking awesome! Really captured the vision of this event.

Hannah: Thank you, Kailey! It's an important story event that deserved the extra time and effort! I love to do little page border breaks and make things look extra glowy.

Kailey: Breaking free of the usual borders really helps it stand out. I love the expressions too: Claire absorbed int he majesty, and Atticus trying to hold back his shock. I can only imagine the wall of text that would cover the panel if we could hear his thoughts, haha.

Hannah: Haha, so true. It would be a jumbled mess. Atticus will definitely bring up what just happened eventually, but he's currently having his mind blown.

Hannah: The cellar that Atticus and Claire are in only had the one light bulb, so it should really be completely dark once it goes out. But that wouldn't be very interesting to look at, so just pretend its darker than it looks!

Kailey: We don't need to, Atticus has got a light source. Apparently a very good one with Claire around. Great job on the lighting, it's very pretty and different from our other scenes.

Hannah: Thanks! I like doing glowy stuff, and Atticus has a lot of it with his alchemy. You could say... Claire lights up his world.

Kailey: I've really been looking forward to this scene and conversation. It was so fun to write up and finally dive into the feelings Claire's been keeping to herself in all her confusion. Atticus is the perfect person to tell them to.

Hannah: He's good with challenging intellectual concepts, not so much with stress. In a weird way, Claire having a crisis is a good thing, it being a perfect distraction so Atticus doesn't panic about all the stomps and scary sounds coming from above them.

Kailey: He's such a good teacher when people are listening and not questioning his practice, haha. But seriously, it's a sweet scene showing more of how their different personalities help balance each other out.

Hannah: I totally agree! And a little detail I'm proud of: as Atticus tries to convince Claire of her personhood in the closeup panel of their hands, his finger is resting on her Heart line.

Hannah: In the first draft of this script, we didn't actually have a panel that showed the EITF coming inside to search Joson's house. But we figured it would be better to show that risk visually in the comic, as well as some clever misdirection by Joson. I love him.

Kailey: Love how you ordered the panels for the addition too. They are literally hiding right under them! If they only could break past the panel line.

Hannah: Thank you! I'm pretty proud of the layout. Thankfully, our baddies don't break the fourth wall, otherwise Atty and Claire would be in trouble. More in trouble, I mean.

Kailey: Instead, cute relationship development in close quarters! So happy that Claire knows she can support Atticus as much as he has her.

Kailey: When you first asked if we should include the characters Claire beat up in her father's lab to be on the team searching for her, I couldn't justify why they would be picked after such a massive beating. Then it came to me: They volunteered. Finding her became personal, haha.

Hannah: Lol yeah, they have more motivation besides doing their jobs now. Plus, they'd be able to recognize her if they saw her. I chose to bring back the agents who were knocked out the quickest in that fight, though, so they have minor injuries.

Kailey: 'Minor injuries?!' Says the guy who had a tank smashed against his face, haha. But, yes, good point. They'd be the best to recognize her too. After the concussions wear off, haha.

Hannah: They weren't expecting Claire and Atticus to put up much of a fight the first time, but I bet they're ready for it now!

Hannah: We went back and forth a little bit on Atticus's exact expression in panel two. Poor Atticus keeps getting his conservative sensibilities shocked by Claire, and I love to see it.

Kailey: I very much pictured him shocked and retracting back at Claire being so risque. Glad a little of that could be fit in between more of his theorizing.

Hannah: He did keep his promise and make it internal this time instead of launching into another rant that would bring up traumatizing memories for her. He's learning!

Kailey: He certainly is, haha. Time to really put it to the test as they go hunker down and hide. The peace couldn't last forever.

Kailey: The Joson clothing line: Oversized shirts for all! Sorry you have to draw all those wrinkles, haha, but it's gotta be easier than the braces and bandages all the time.

Hannah: Haha, it definitely is simpler than braces. Its a good challenge for me since I usually draw more fitted clothes. Poor Joson is going to run out of shirts at this rate.

Kailey: Ooh! We need to remember to give one of his pairs of goggles to Claire! Don't you miss drawing those in her hair?

Hannah: lol If she gets more goggles I'm making them simpler to draw. This scene has some good parallels to the first time Atticus got into his overexplaining mode to Claire on page 46, and it makes me happy to see how much better it turned out.

Hannah: Atticus, Claire, and Joson's minds are all on different tracks for this page, and juggling all of their perspectives on these reveals has been really fun. Not fun for them, of course.

Kailey: Claire's doing her best to explain what happened to her just earlier that day, but that can be hard to understand if you weren't there first hand. We've all experienced that at one point or another, things can feel more personal to us than to others, so I'm glad Claire has someone like Joson nearby that can read her emotions even though he doesn't quite understand it all.

Hannah: Atticus tends to go deaf to the outside world when he's processing new information, which can be bad for everyone around, haha. Poor Claire.

Kailey: He's quick to apologize this time, though! Unlike that time in the lab where he couldn't stop himself and she stormed off. Plus, she's getting to know him too, that he doesn't mean any harm with the hypothesizing. They're getting to know each other so well!

Kailey: Poor Atticus, being so proud of making connections to poor Claire, hearing the name of her captor spoken of so highly.

Hannah: It's been a while since we've had a good ramble from him, haha. He's so oblivious sometimes.

Kailey: He's so cute though! It's a rare happy ramble! Too bad it came crashing down. I'm still happy the cast is making the connections in a more fun way than just Claire telling them everything flat.

Hannah: I agree! I love showing how the information they have overlaps in dramatically different ways. Atticus name dropped Professor Cohen wayyyy back on page 27 when he was scolding Jasper.

Hannah: I was unsure about doing flashbacks that aren't from Claire or Atticus's perspective at first, but the more of them we include, the more I like them. They really help flesh out the story and we get to include details that we wrote later on in the series!

Kailey: Joson was going to tell the story and give the information anyway. Much more interesting to see those events instead of more talking heads. Plus, we get young Joson! And little Claire! She's so cute!

Hannah: I love little Claire! And yeah, I like breaking out of the talking heads for more exposition-heavy conversations. It was really fun to draw Joson at various points in his past.

Kailey: It's fun to see and learn how Joson met Garrett and in turn was introduced to Claire as her mentor. Poor guy had no idea what he was getting into by assisting Garrett, but I'm sure happy he stuck around to be such a great support and role model for Claire.

Kailey: Lots of dialogue for this page, but it's necessary, and I rather enjoy it. Also, we haven't gotten such pretty close ups of our characters for a while now! I love the detail!

Hannah: Dialogue heavy pages give me a chance to really dive into the emotions of the characters. There's a part of me that worries that a whole bunch of talking heads will be boring, but I do my best to still make it engaging!

Kailey: You do so wonderfully! Your composition makes this one of my favorites. Plus, it's good to see Claire confront everything her dad's secrets are putting her through.

Hannah: That second to last panel is one of my favorites of her, as well. I love her determination!

Hannah: Last week's page had a little montage of what happened while Atticus was unconscious. I imagine Claire blurted everything out in a jumbled mess and confused and concerned Joson even more than he was already, haha. Thankfully he got enough info to know he should probably burn the evidence of Claire and Atticus's escapes from the EITF.

Kailey: She at least got out the part that they're wanted by the empirical police! And I imagine that's all she needed to focus on saying, because getting rid of the scooter and clothes would take a long time. Rest in peace, scoots. You were fun to color while you lasted.

Hannah: Heh, I've got to admit, I'm glad scoots is gone since it was difficult to draw the angles on. I did like the color, though!

Kailey: That's because I made it the same color as Claire's old overalls, haha. I miss those. She's rocking Joson's olive green ones though! And Atticus is rocking the blanket cape. Hype for them to get more into the conversation now that they're not running for their lives.

Kailey: Claire's so buff. I'm sure Jack would be proud to know Atticus is getting princess carried.

Hannah: Haha, he totally would be. I didn't even think about the fact that this is the second time Atticus has been princess carried, its been such a long time since the first one. Makes me happy that Atty has so many people to take care of him.

Kailey: The lighting is excellent on this page, it's probably my favorite part. The fires of the furnace, and the opening of the doorway as Atticus explores this new place he's woken up in. Wonderful job.

Hannah: Aw, thank you! :3 I might have made that last panel look a little too epic considering the simple action, but the framing suits his feelings of determination.

Hannah: We're back! With a new year comes a new location, and a character we haven't seen since chapter two. It feels great to get back into Claire and Atticus's story!

Kailey: I can't believe it's been so long since we've seen Joson! I was going back for my color references and it blew my mind when I saw it was page 31! We've come a long way, and so have our heroes. Joson's was a safe house for Claire back then, so she definitely feels it can be again.

Hannah: Agreed! I also enjoy drawing Joson's magnificent beard. Poor Atty is taking an impromptu nap, but I'm happy that Claire has some backup.

Kailey: Some excellent backup! Joson has been great support even though we haven't seen him for so long. I'm excited to dive more into his role and relationship with Claire. I liked what you wrote for Joson when you first sent me the thumbnail drafts: '...Why does your friend's name sound like a pained noise?' Haha!

Kailey: Gotta check on Dulara first before we ride into the sunset(afternoon daylight), of course! So glad Atticus gets in his last word after causing her so much trouble.

Hannah: I imagine he was too tired/focused on getting his brace on to bother replying to her screaming through the door. I feel bad for the doctor, nurse, and handyman in the hall with her.

Kailey: I'm sure this is a first for their hospital, haha. A patient using alchemy to lock a door, then jumping out a window. Dulara certainly isn't going to be getting any accolades for how she handled this job. Makes me also happy to see Atticus a little more comfortable than the last time he had to cling on to Claire while she drove through the streets.

Hannah: I never get tired of seeing Dulara mad, especially now that Atticus is the one with a smug lil' smile. Like Kailey said, its so great to see both Atticus and Claire happy and free. On that high note, we're going on our holiday break!

We've decided to go on our usual holiday break a little early this year with the timing of this chapter scene. There won't be any new comic pages from now through all of December, while we take time to relax and focus on family. Thank you for all the support we've received so far this year!

Hannah: At last, a hug! And a kiss, too. Kailey and I have been calling it 'the kith' for at least a month.

Kailey: Ack! Don't tell them that! Haha, but looking at this page reminded me how you would roll, basically flip a coin, on whether Atticus's heart rate would make him pass out or not. I remember freaking out at how terrible this time would be if he did!

Hannah: Haha, I guess its my turn to be a cruel writer. Atticus's heartrate increasing isn't always for bad reasons, but I wanted to show that it can be risky no matter what it is that's gotten him excited. Thus, him trying to move on to Important Things quickly even though he's obviously affected by Claire's adorable sincerity.

Kailey: Heheh, we cut in the original that his brain literally shut off and he kissed her back because it was 'the gentlemanly thing to do to return a gift'. Almost sad we cut it, but this fits him better. Glad he's the thinker and Claire takes action. Hope everyone enjoys the reunion!

Kailey: Hooray! Reunited at last! So satisfying and also a relief. Even though separating them gives us a wider perspective of what's going on, I like it better when they share scenes.

Hannah: Me too! I realized when I drew that first panel that it's been a long time since we've actually seen Claire's face without that mask. Its wonderful to draw her smiling again!

Kailey: Both of them with such genuine smiles. Been looking forward to this for a long time. They've been so worried about each other from the events of the previous night, and I'm very glad they are not the types that would just sit on those worries. They both wanted to take action to make sure they were ok.

Hannah: Originally the page was pretty sparse on dialogue, but Kailey made some very helpful suggestions, and I couldn't be happier with the result!

Hannah: Tying pieces of your blanket together and climbing out the window is a classic escape plan- but Atty put his own spin on it by merging the strips of cloth end to end with alchemy.

Kailey: I was going to ask what the circle on the floor was for. Smart! Less knots, less rick of it falling apart. Feels great to get him outside too!

Hannah: It really does! It's no palace garden, but at least it's not that bland hospital room. Atty's face in the final panel is my favorite.

Kailey: Mine too, haha. Can't wait for his face after he finds out who that strange officer is.

Kailey: Ah, finally a breath of fresh air with a side of a garden chase scene as we get back outside. But really, such amazing detail on this page! It's so pretty! I loved getting to color greenery again after so long, haha.

Hannah: SO much greenery. I may have gone a teeny bit overboard, but that's what palaces are all about! This page ended up being even more complex than I'd pictured when I designed it, but I think it was worth it for the final grand effect.

Kailey: And epic chase choreography! Up and over Claire! I feel bad for delivery guy, but I also love seeing her get to drive again after all the terror she's been through. You've done so well fitting so much on a single page. It's very impressive.

Hannah: Thank you! It took a lot of rearranging and tricky angles to make the most out of this page! A tricky page for a daring escape, as Claire finally breaks free of the EITF's clutches (almost) completely unscathed.

Kailey: No, I'm pretty sure she's kicking that door, heheh. But really, she's paying for it. Funny how by being so afraid and restrictive of alchemy has led to her, and many others, being so ignorant of its uses.

Hannah: Thankfully, in this moment its a very good thing for Atticus.

Kailey: I can read his exact thoughts from that smirk alone. A big old 'I told you so'.

Hannah: I've been having fun ramping up the action in these panels as the urgency of Claire's escape increases! I also love the immediate mood switch of the kind EITF agent as he becomes suspicious of Claire.

Kailey: I have to imagine that the EITF doesn't really know what's going on either. Like, they've heard the scary word 'homunculus' and what their superiors say about it, and react negatively. They can still be nice people, just doing their jobs, and would probably be very different out of uniform. And speaking of out of uniform: Sounds like that poor guard at the elevator finally finished his trip to the labs.

Hannah: Even if Dulara had tried to pry off the top of Atticus's cane, it wouldn't have budged. He may have gone overboard on security features to hide his glowy marbles, but paranoia has paid off for him so far.

Kailey: I'm so glad we finally get to reveal why he had that specific cane around and why it looks the way it does. Where he got that spare marble all the way back when he first met Claire.

Hannah: Yep! She didn't see it because she was too busy looking up in awe at the descending airship. I love putting a lot of thought into little details like this. Plus, drawing glowing alchemy circles is really fun.

Kailey: The lock design is so cool! I love what you came up with. Especially the added three panels at the top that weren't originally in the scripts, heheh. Really made me bust up laughing when you sent me the thumbnail concepts.

Hannah: Heheh, thanks. It's incredibly satisfying to me for him to have the last word, so to speak. Dulara's empty threat doesn't even deserve a response.

Kailey: Love how Atticus and Claire both get their version of alarms. I can feel the slow-mo as Atticus rushes out to get to work. Health monitor or not: Dulara would come back and he needs to get that door stalled asap.

Hannah: I wanted to inject some of that action energy into this scene that we've been seeing with Claire, and I'm happy with how it turned out in the last panel. Its been almost exactly a year in real time since Atticus woke up in that hospital bed, and now he's finally up on his own two feet. It feels great!

Kailey: Really does. We had to spend a lot of time on set up, and monologues, it can be hard to keep track of how much time has actually passed in-universe. Very exciting things are moving again and some great stuff coming up.

Hannah: Makes me go: Eeeeeee!

Hannah: Finally, these scenes are taking place at the exact same moment for our protagonists! Or however fast a radio wave travels.

Kailey: Fast enough for Dulara not to be prepared! I love her posing in panel 6 so much! It's like she's saying: Atticus Falke. Stay. Staayyyy.

Hannah: Hehehe, I don't know if you saw it or not, but I actually added that in the script for my own reference. 'Panel 5: Dulara glares at Atticus, one hand pointing at him to 'stay' like a dog.' It makes me happy that that came across so clearly!

Kailey: Ha ha, I love it! It fits her personality so well! Too bad for her Atticus isn't some trained dog. He's so happy and raring to go! I love seeing his genuine smile after so long.

Kailey: I love how panel three is framed, especially with the dialogue. Definitely my favorite of the page.

Hannah: I love that panel too! It was so colorful with all the different skin, scale, and hair colors, before I washed it out with the red alarm lights.

Kailey: We could always save their designs for future EITF appearances in the daylight. Haha, I can tell you missed drawing random background characters. These are all so gorgeous and full of personality for the single appearance.

Hannah: I prefer background characters to backgrounds, that's for sure! Although, its been sort of an interesting challenge to practice communicating the 'personality' of a place through the architecture, as Claire escapes the glowing tanks of Cohen's gothic crypt turned creepy alchemy lab, to the more modern architecture of the EITF headquarters, where modern fixtures like electric lights and pipes have been overlaid on the archways of the palace basement.

Hannah: I'm glad we waited to show this part of the palace until now. It saved me some design work, and served a greater purpose for the storytelling as well. Claire saw this hallway while being thrown in the holding cell before being sent down the elevator to Cohen, but we made those panels purposely disjointed and close up on her face to show her disorientation. Now, we finally get to see the layout of the EITF palace headquarters in more detail!

Kailey: I thank you for the patience with me while we organized the layout. It's fun to be back to Claire, but it was obvious in the original scripts that changes need to be made for her side of the story to even be plausible. I'm beyond happy with how things have turned out on the drawn page. The lighting is just spectacular!

Hannah: I love having the chance to put more thought into details like this to make our story even better! Another detail I'm proud of that was kind of a last minute addition: the EITF uniform patches. The only other time we've seen them wear the official royal crest is when they were searching the wreckage of Claire's house.

Kailey: I remember early in Atticus's development that instead of a politician, he had aspirations to be a lawyer. I love that it is still incorporated into his personality and peeks through here. I love how he's finding his own way to fight back no matter his circumstances.

Hannah: There's certainly some overlap in the two professions in being able to make a convincing argument, so I think it fits! He's got a tricky mind, and panel four is one of my favorite sly Atticus faces so far.

Kailey: Mine too, heheh. And speaking about the 'Treatise of Sentiente Beings', is that why you got after me about the Lizardfolk doctor/vet comment I made a couple pages ago? Your Atticus was showing, haha!

Hannah: Another character we haven't seen for a while appears! Yanny Bordug, the Falkes' faithful goblin butler. Last time we saw him Atticus threw a tantrum at him, but I like to think he's trying to make up for it by being extra polite.

Kailey: I was going to say the cane! I nearly forgot that Atticus hasn't had it around since before the day he met up with Claire on the motorcycle. Glad he could get Yanny to deliver things with Dulara watching over his shoulder.

Hannah: Literally. All Atticus can do right now is talk, so he's making use of that in any way he can.

Kailey: And think. His greatest strength, and those gears are spinning. I can tell.

Kailey: Feels great to be back! And there's nothing better to return to than Atticus's wonderful snark. It's great to see him again after a long section with Claire. Those bright hospital colors make good contrast again too.

Hannah: I agree! I'm refreshed and excited to dive back into the comic after our break, and see what Atticus has been up to since we last saw him. From context, he's mostly been unconscious. I especially enjoyed drawing a lizard doctor with glasses on this page.

Kailey: You were so kind to as well, haha. When we first wrote it, I swore they had glasses, but you never described the doctor with such! I love how Atticus's doctor is a Lizardfolk in general. Like, a reverse veterinarian?

Hannah: Happy end of chapter! We wanted to close this chapter on a more positive note than the last one, with a hopeful flashback and the beginning of Claire's escape from the creepy lab. It was fun to design the little collage of cute supportive moments of the two of them, mirroring Atticus's thoughts in the hospital.

Kailey: This was a big chapter to get through with a lot of information, events, and pages! It ended up expanded from our original plan, so we thank our readers big time for the patience so we could get it just right for precious moments like these to hit right.

Hannah: It has been incredibly satisfying to craft this scene with such dramatic camera angles and big plot reveals, both as a writer and artist. I'm looking forward to the next chapter after our break!

Kailey: Run, Claire, run! She knows there's plenty more than being a science experiment. I absolutely love the overhead view we get of the first lab room. Was not expecting to ever get that angle, and you pulled it off excellently, Hannah!

Hannah: Thanks! Originally this was going to be the final page of the chapter, but action scenes always take up more room than I think they will. So, naturally I wanted to play around with angles to make it more dramatic! I loved the idea of Claire running back through this massive room, and from above she looks especially tiny.

Kailey: The perspective really helps with the scope of the place that we didn't get before. This was quite the massive dungeon converted to a lab. Being stuck down there for long without the light of day would make anyone a bit stir crazy. Or a lot, considering the one pursuing Claire.

Hannah: This was a tough page to plan out, so I ended up sketching several layouts. Action scenes always take up a lot of space, but its worth it to give this chapter a proper ending! For once, Claire's the one looming over Cohen as the one in control of the situation has changed.

Kailey: That is such a cool shot! It was a lot more hit and run in the original, but you've styled it to be much more satisfying as Claire finally, and rightfully, gets the upper hand.

Hannah: Claire's not the type to just run away without doing some damage first, especially after all the trauma the professor has caused her and her family.

Kailey: As she has shown in earlier scenes of the comic as well. Claire's a fighter, and keeps being underestimated. I love her and her determination and you've portrayed it beautifully yet again.

Kailey: This mad scientist can make all the assumptions he wants, but just because he knows what Claire is doesn't mean he knows Claire. So happy to see her hone in on her own feelings after all his ramblings.

Hannah: On this page we have the return of the spooky green lighting, as well as yet another scary room. I've really enjoyed playing with lighting while we get all these big reveals from Professor Cohen!

Kailey: Storytime is over! The professor definitely likes to dwell on the past. I'm glad we fit so much in the span of these past few pages, but I'm ready to move on and get back to the present.

Hannah: Me too. It's fun to break out of regular page layout to experiment to show the rambling nature of the speech, and now that his speech is over, the images are contained within regular panels again.

Kailey: They were fun pages! Going back to the regular style is like grounding back to reality. I love the body language you gave to Cohen where he just tosses the photos he's been using, haha. They don't matter now that it's time for science!

Kailey: Heheh, I love Garrett's pose in the second photo. Gives such Claire vibes.

Hannah: Heheh, I'm glad! I've been trying to make some of their mannerisms and expressions similar through the photos. Even though Garrett doesn't have dialogue, the Lockhart family resemblance goes beyond words.

Kailey: His posing in the final spot is perfect too. So cheery as an alchemist, switching to a sad and disgruntled pilot. But it still has that feel of determination to his values. He didn't need the dialogue. You've done excellent on the body language. And it's cool to see the Empress's part in all of it with her dominating visual.

Hannah: I had a lot of fun with that last panel, and the composition of the page in general! I love making very dramatic posters, and I wanted to make an impression with the capstone of Cohen's monologue. Its a lot of info, and I'm so excited to finally reveal more pieces of the story!

Hannah: We debated for a while on how to show the backstory on this page- whether it should be a full flashback or another monologue, and ended up with a mix of real time monologue to show them going to the new location, and the photos and materials that the professor shows Claire, and through her, the reader.

Kailey: I really like this. A great middle ground to prevent more panels of talking heads. I love seeing Garrett and Alton together in the past, photo proof for Claire of her father's secret life. Can't deny it anymore, no matter how crazy her situation has gotten.

Hannah: Her utter rejection of the situation feels more from a place of revulsion than actual denial of reality, but I wouldn't trust anything this guy told me without proof, either. I mean, he outright told her that he can use alchemy to mess with her head.

Kailey: I think back to Atticus's assumptions as well and her initial reaction to the proof in front of her. Can't deny photos. Those, and the way Cohen talks about it. A weird mix of respect and spite. I can't wait to get into his and Garrett's history together.

This page was another fun one to layout, including puns! This guy has no respect for safety. Just too proud to care. Writing these pages have been tricky because Cohen is quite the talker. We're trying to incorporate more back and forth with Claire in these comics compared to his original draft of lengthly dialouge. So far, we like the results! While she's in quite the predicament, we want to make sure to keep her headstrong attitude and not give Cohen all the spotlight that we know he wants.

We once again want to apologize for the delay on this page's release and not announcing it beforehand. We are both getting used to some new work schedules and keep our focus on the comic at the same time, so when we don't make a deadline, it's been unexpected. We hope to resolve this really soon and be back to a more predictable release schedule, but if our usual Tuesday post isn't present without warning, this is why. We would hate to take a longer break during such a crucial scene! Thank you for your patience!

Kailey: Oooof, is that punch satisfying to see. Even though her temper leads to her downfall in the end, it's good to see Claire give that man a well deserved wallop first.

Hannah: It's so cathartic! Kailey suggested that I just copy and paste that panel five times for this page, and I was extremely tempted.

Kailey: Heheh, I'll just appreciate it that many times and ignore the rest for a bit. But, alas, the story must continue, and it wouldn't be truly satisfying if it ended there. Still so many answers to so many questions to reveal. Claire is just unfortunate that she has to experience those answers first hand.

Hannah: She can only handle so many minutes of talking about terrifying and confusing revelations before her fight or flight instincts kick in. And unfortunately for her, Cohen had a trick up his sleeve, in the form of a weirdly jointed robot arm.

Hannah: Honestly, I'm surprised Claire didn't catch on to Cohen sooner. His baddie energy is off the charts! But she's too nice and willing to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Kailey: Without evidence up until that point, I'm with her on just trying to get the heck out of there as soon as possible. But, he knew exactly how to goad her right back in.

Hannah: Yeah, we had to do a ton of edits to his original dialogue on this page, but it was so worth it for the end result!

Kailey: And still more edits to come. Monologuing is way too easy to write when it's only text. If we kept what I wrote, this whole page would just be a block of text, haha. It's a lot of work, but worth it to make the dramatic hits all the better without all the clustered filler.

Kailey: Sorry for unexpected break last week, but we're back and with another eerie green page! I love Claire getting a bit sassy here. Finally clicking that her dad wasn't quite as honest as she thought and that this guy is maybe a little off.

Hannah: Only a little, haha... the professor has reached a level of suspicion with her where she shuts down from the information overload. It reminds me of when Atticus brought her to his much less creepy alchemy lab.

Kailey: Haha, the parallels. This guy might have more of a story and possible evidence, but Atticus definitely had more of Claire's needs in mind. Two alchemists, two very different intentions.

Hannah: Yes indeed! I'm enjoying the parallels of this scene with some others in the story, and I'm intrigued to see what connections our readers will make.

Hannah: All of the packed dialogue on this page is making up for last week! After all the buildup to this meeting, I'm hyped to finally show Professor Cohen and Claire talking. Or rather, her interjecting while he monologues.

Kailey: Last week set up the atmosphere, this week the context. I'm glad Claire is finally getting some context, even if it's in terrible circumstances.

Hannah: On a side note, I had way too much fun drawing Cohen's unhinged smile in panel 5. I've also enjoyed dramatically framing the characters in this scene with the big glowing tanks on the walls, as we find out some information about Garrett Lockhart's past that's been a long time coming!

Kailey: You've done epic as usual in characterizing these characters with your art. I'm excited to eventually explain that glowing green and it's significant purpose. It's much more than just an eerie and mood setting color pallette, heheh.

Going back to our early days on this blurb, haha. Forgive us, we got too busy leading up to today's post to do our usual back and forth. Hannah knocked the atmosphere out of the park on this introdution. Finally, we get to reveal one of the big players: Professor Alton Cohen. We've been really, really looking forward to this scene and a lot of planning went into how this lab would look from its original description to now. We decided that underneath the modern palace is the remains of an older one, built on top of over the years and a remnant of the city's history. Now, it's old crypts have been converted into this secret alchemy lab that Claire finds herself thrust into.

Kailey: We're back! Happy New Year! And happy continuation of Chapter 5! Sort of... Claire isn't too happy returning to her side of the story.

Hannah: Haha, at least we as authors are happy to be back. Our characters always have a rough time. I'm so excited to draw Claire again! I've missed her.

Kailey: As much as I dislike Claire and Atticus being separated at parts of the story, it's at least refreshing for us to get to switch between scenes. Gives a chance to show the different perspectives and plot information. It's always best to get to write and draw both of them together, though.

Hannah: And, scene! Its a bit of a cliffhanger ending before our holiday break, but there's no stopping point in this chapter that wouldn't have some tension.

Kailey: I'm just glad we pushed through and got Atticus's scene finished before a big break. Lots to be excited for when we return to Claire's side of the story! Been looking forward to it since the beginning. Poor Atticus though... He's going to take a lot of unnecessary blame.

Hannah: I'm hyped to see Claire again, too! As I'm sure our readers have figured out by now... there were a lot of things about Dulara's behavior that didn't line up. If you go back and look at the start of this scene, the green light on her radio has been on the whole time, signaling that she's been transmitting their conversation to get the info they need from him. In modern times, 'evidence' like this wouldn't hold up in court. He's on some intense painkillers, as well as being under duress. But the EITF doesn't care about fair trial.

Kailey: They got someone admitting and saying the word 'homunculus', from the Falke that's involved no less. It's technically what the Empress and her son were worried about, so they've now got it covered. Dulara will still be sticking around to make sure Atticus doesn't blab about the true story, however.

Kailey: You really nailed the scenes to choose for the collage! Seeing them along with Atticus's speech really makes me feel nostalgic for the earlier stuff.

Hannah: Aw, thank you! It's a nice look back at the story so far. It makes me cringe at the old art a little, but also makes me feel proud at how much my art has improved.

Kailey: No cringing allowed! It's gorgeous, and most of all, you got the feeling down back then, which is what we needed here. I remember when we first played out this scene. I loved writing for the tough and naive Dulara across from Atticus. It was hard not just agreeing with him.

Hannah: I imagine Atticus runs into Dulara's type of ignorance about alchemy a lot, but for once he's not focused on lecturing her about the specifics of his favorite kind of science. This time, he's got a different focus.

Hannah: We haven't had a page with this many panels for a while! More talking, but I did my best to make things dynamic and pretty to look at. Besides Jack, of course.

Kailey: His panels alone take care of that, haha. Dulara isn't too impressed though. Jack once again in for the suave speaking save, distracting her whether she cares about his offer or not. It's good to see Atticus getting some help.

Hannah: He needs it! I like to think of both Atticus and Jack as protagonist material- they just belong to different genres. Atticus is playing out his mystery/drama, while Jack might feel at home on an action movie poster. I enjoy drawing his flamboyant poses so much.

Kailey: They wonderfully complement each other, personality, goals, lifestyles; it's probably a big reason why they make good friends beyond just their history together. I love his thumbs up at the end. Gives me 'Detective Jack Renee is on the case!' vibes.

Kailey: Another visitor for Atticus! So good to see their established friendship again. Atticus has quite the support system.

Hannah: I'm so happy to see Jack again! And Dulara really needs to find a better spot to stand than behind the door.

Kailey: I'd rather she not learn her lesson. That way she can risk getting smacked by the door next time, but that wouldn't be fair to the door. It's great to see Jack being a kind friend again. Atticus needs to stop worrying him. Am I remembering correctly that when you developed Atticus that Jack came along paired with him from the start, or did you develop the best friend later?

Hannah: I wrote them as a pair, for sure! They have a lot of traits that compliment each other, and I loved the contrast of writing these two very different people as best friends.

Hannah: It was a last minute addition in my coloring process, but I'm very proud of the small visual reference to Atticus's nightmare sequence. There are very good reasons for Victoria's nervous breakdown.

Kailey: I remember having no clue in the original draft of the story of the Falke family's loss, but when it was finally revealed much later, I got to go back to this and understand Victoria's reaction completely. I'm glad we explored Atticus's family dynamic so much sooner.

Hannah: Yes! Its nice to show more of both of his parents. Unfortunately, a minute with his mom is all he gets before Dulara's eagle eye is back on him.

Kailey: He looks and sounds so hopeless in the last panel. Probably would be too much for his mother to know about the conspiracy he's getting wrapped in. Good of Thaddeus to help her leave to get a breather.

Kailey: Remind me never to get between Thaddeus Falke and his family. Wait, I'm one of the authors... Dang it.

Hannah: Good thing authors and characters can't meet, or we'd be screwed. I love drawing the Falke family all together. In my opinion, stories sometimes use dead or absent parents as an excuse so the kids can go on adventures. In our story we've got both options covered.

Kailey: Plus, Atticus is technically an adult. It's an interesting dynamic to explore where he's both incredibly independent and dependent. Good to see his parents there and protective of him when the time comes.

Hannah: They let him do his own thing for the most part, but he's still their child. I'm glad I get to show them being caring parents. Atticus definitely needs the support right now.

Hannah: What a (in)convenient interruption! Its been more than a year in real time since we've seen Atticus's parents, but for him it was only the night before. Comic time is weird.

Kailey: Seriously. I missed seeing them! It's so nice he has family to be with him, with government cover-ups or not.

Hannah: You can definitely see the family resemblance. He got his mother's nervous temperament and his father's brooding eyebrows.

Kailey: Haha! He does take after both of them! And hopefully they take after him as well, and become skeptics of Dulara.

Kailey: He's at a disadvantage for sure. Just woke up, probably on some pain meds, hooked up to machines, only wearing a hospital gown... Oh, and being shot. That's not great either.

Hannah: At least he's not in a cell... although this hospital room might as well be one with Dulara there.

Hannah: I love how bright and fresh this page feels! We've had some pretty dark and moody lighting these last few chapters, and its great to see some morning light again.

Kailey: Atticus is finally back to reality, but it's not that much better. Might have brighter lighting, but there's a lady looming over him in the hospital room. I remember having fun with her introduction to the story.

Hannah: Heheh, yes indeed. My favorite panel is probably number 5, just because of Atticus's 'wtf' expression.

Kailey: Haha, I love his face in that panel! And his response to being called a pain. He's definitely not quite awake yet, and it lightens the scene even more than just being morning.

Kailey: Aww, Atticus, don't be so hard on yourself. There were a lot more factors that went into Claire's capture, and none were your fault.

Hannah: Nightmares aren't good for self-esteem, that's for sure. I have to admit as sad as this page is, I had a blast with the lighting, and especially Atticus's sad face.

Kailey: It's obvious how much fun you had with this new scene, haha, you tragedy writer. I like how it shows the comparison of how he lost his sister to Claire's situation with her father. Perhaps this is where his original sympathy came from?

Hannah: I was definitely going for those tragic parallels in the imagery!

Hannah: Finally, we get to see what Atticus has been up to! And its all fine and dandy. Nothing sad here, nosiree.

Kailey: Not even what he's up to, but more his mind. Quite in shock, going through surgery, and bringing up some memories. Very enjoyable to get some backstory in sooner than originally expected, but a dream sequence is the perfect opportunity.

Hannah: From an artistic standpoint, it was hard to decide how I wanted to do this sequence. I didn't want to do it in sepia since we'd already done that for Claire's flashbacks, and this isn't purely a memory. I thought about doing greyscale, but color is too important to me for setting the emotional tone for a scene to cut it out entirely. Instead I went the opposite direction and made everything extra bright and contrasted, and made the page color itself grey.

Kailey: Dreams are in color, so you made the right choice. And color is being used to portray such a different balance in scenes and subject in such little time. It's refreshing to get back to Atticus as a character, and I'm excited to see if our readers look back at the comic and find the references that led to this reveal.

Kailey: I mean, I feel bad for saying this, but I'm really happy Claire's out of that frilly dress, haha. Not that this one suits her either, but at least all the frills are gone from a coloring standpoint.

Hannah: While I was doing this page I was about to whine about all the frills in that big panel, then realized it was a simple dress and I didn't have to draw them. While that made me happy as an artist, there's the writer voice in competition with it that says 'yet another step in the EITF's relentless attempts to dehumanize Claire by taking away anything that has any personality'.

Kailey: That's pretty much it. She's just a messed up and illegal science experiment to them. At least she's finally being given a chance to reflect on that insanity? Dragged around place to place, even in a prison cell, it's nice to finally get a break alone.

Hannah: Cue the mental breakdown that she hasn't had time for! I want to give her a hug.

Kailey: And you put all that effort into character detail instead. Just look at that dress! So classy, yet ruthless. You've captured the Empress wonderfully. She would have had her way if it weren't for that meddling Falke.

Hannah: Heh, those darn Falkes, always getting in the way. I love the mix of pettiness and arrogance in tone that we achieved with the Empress's dialogue and design. Its been an essential scene to introduce this character!

Kailey: Seriously. Prince Aaron too. The Falke's have become involved? More like your task force shot one. Excited to keep revealing how this new setting and turn of events progresses.

Hannah: New location, new establishing shot! I like to make these big panels bleed off of the edges of the page to give it extra impact.

Kailey: It's a really cool stylistic choice. The palace of New Reidle! I've been excited to introduce this location and it's crazy to finally see it drawn. It's a character of its own.

Hannah: Designing this building was a long process, but a step we absolutely couldn't afford to skip. I want to give a special shoutout to our wonderful 3d artist, Josh, for his assistance! The perspective for the first panel was a lot easier with his model as reference.

Kailey: Definitely! But he did use your floorplan and drawing as reference. I'll have to be sure to post all the art that went into designing the building up on the Patreon. So excited to go inside it for future pages! I know Claire sure isn't, haha.

Kailey: We're back! With Claire in the back of a disguised prison van! I really think we should have kept it pitch black with floating cartoon eyes, but you were kind enough to do some excellent dark shading instead. 😉

Hannah: The next dark scene we do, I'll keep that in mind. ;P 😜

Until I started coloring this page, I didn't realize that there wouldn't be any light source inside this van, so I just decided to do soft shading and make everything way dimmer than usual. Comic storytelling is interesting that way. As much as I want to show this scene from Claire's viewpoint, it wouldn't be very interesting to read if I stuck to it that rigorously.

Kailey: It's really amazing, and I love seeing the progress in your art when looking from the comic from start to present page. Page 100! It's come so far, it's surreal! And yet, it also only feels like we're getting started on telling the story to its fullest.

Hannah: I'm proud of how far we've come as storytellers. With each new chapter and page, I hope to keep improving!

We're back! And with the cover for Chapter 5!

We're so excited to return to regular updates, and even more than that: The first page of Chapter 5 will be page 100 of the comic! That's an amazing accomplishment to us, so we'll be celebrating it with our readers! Thank you so much for all the support and for following Claire and Atticus on their adventures.

Hannah: And with that, our heroes bleeding and in the clutches of the EITF, we end chapter four!

Kailey: Whew! It was a big one. Lots of reveals, action, and still more questions. Plot's really going to speed up after this. We were really looking forward to Chapter 4 ever since deciding to make this into a comic. It was impactful when we first wrote it, and it's still impactful now in comic form.

Hannah: Absolutely! The result of this confrontation may feel a bit shocking and abrupt after the slower pacing in the first three chapters. Trust me, as a co-writer of the original rp that this comic is based on, I was just as flabbergasted. I can't wait to answer some questions and show you, our readers, how the pieces of this mystery are starting to fit together! Next chapter is going to be epic! But for now its time for a break. This chapter has been intense in both story and art and I'm happy to have a breather.

Kailey: Welp! That's one way to quickly end a fight! Alchemy steroids can't withstand a bullet apparently. I don't remember: Did we roll for that? I had the EITF guy shoot Atticus, but did you just go along with it?

Hannah: Yeah, I rolled to see if he could dodge and he got a 3 or something. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was a very low number! He was doing so well, and just that like it was over.

Kailey: Crazy to think how the entire story could have changed if Claire and Atticus won, but this was the end of the fight for sure. Very intense, and I love how it turned out on paper, and now in comic form.

Hannah: While we're comparing this fight scene to the original way it was written in the rp, I will mention that I added another whole page of them beating up the EITF. Unfortunately for them, the bad guys brought gun to a knife-boot fight and its not looking good for our heroes. We only have one more page until the end of the chapter!

Hannah: I'm really proud of the overhead angle in panel one, but boy was it a lot of work! It was about time to do a visual reset for this action scene. Half of the original squad of agents is down, with reinforcements on their way down the stairs, and we get to see the tall odds Claire and Atticus are facing. Especially in the case of that lizard man, where 6 feet tall is on the short side for his race.

Kailey: Seriously! Holy suplex, Atticus! In our lore doc, we detailed the lizardfolk race to being the biggest, strongest, heaviest race. Alchemy steroids are not to be reckoned with! I'm glad we extended the fight scene to show that off in its entirety.

Hannah: And don't forget the return of the EITF's most feared enemy: Claire's boot knife. They really should have included that in the briefing for this new group of agents that were sent after her... But I'm not complaining. Its incredibly satisfying to draw our duo beating them up.

Kailey: Well, they didn't learn, I suppose. In their briefing it was like: 'She's wearing a prom dress. No girl wears knife boots with prom dresses.' More girls should, just in case of situations like these.

Kailey: We're back, and with violence! Man, Atticus really doesn't hold back. It's like a whole different side to him with the alchemy energy burst.

Hannah: He just got kicked in the ribs and watched Claire get tazed. No way is he taking it easy on these guys!

Kailey: Especially on that Captain Charlotte. Face reveal and a lifelong grudge is born!

Hannah: I do love the instant hate for her. She deserves it! Oh, and as an artsy side-note, I'm very proud of Atticus's ominous reflection in her goggles.

Kailey: I think no matter what Atticus did, they'd find some excuse to arrest them. Like for resisting in the first place. Still good he destroyed everything though. Don't want to discount that. Dangerous alchemy on those papers.

Hannah: In my opinion, these agents are attributing the dangerous, scary science stuff to the wrong person in this room. I mean, just look at that deranged alchemist in panel two.

Kailey: Yeah, haha! I love his face so much in that panel. All his alchemy smugness activating at once.

Hannah: Poor Claire, on the other hand, is still limp from shock. While working on this whole scene, I've loved the contrast of her wearing a frilly, fancy dress while discovering such dark, disconcerting information about her past.

Kailey: An identity crisis and flames. Very dynamic page compared to how we usually organize things, but I believe it gets the message across better than a single panel for everything Atticus takes down from the walls.

Kailey: It's easy to see! I'm also happy you drew a vent in the room, because otherwise this wouldn't end so well.

Hannah: Being an alchemy lab with lots of chemicals and weird substances, it makes sense to have a vent. Not that Atticus wouldn't have been desperate enough to light a fire either way.

Hannah: I've really loved the contrast of how Claire and Atticus handle different kinds of conflict, in this chapter especially. Claire's having a mental breakdown as she's bombarded with all of this information that changes everything about her past, but when somebody shows up that she needs to fight off, she leaps into action. Atticus, on the other hand, is sweating like mad as the EITF try to break their way in, but he's analyzing and picking apart the information they've found with his steady logic.

Kailey: It definitely highlights their strengths. Claire is not good with more mental conflict, as shown in earlier pages with her flashbacks. She shuts down when things are confusing. She's a woman of spontaneous action, and in a situation like this, it's not a strength. It's good she has Atticus for support.

Hannah: They make a good team. That said, I'm sure Atticus wouldn't be doing as great with his logical analysis if he discovered he was homunculus.

Kailey: Everyone's a homunculus! Just kidding. Nah, he wouldn't do so great, and neither would Claire in that situation. This alchemy stuff goes right over her head. She's going to have to figure it out quick though, since she is alchemy.

Kailey: Time for some fall out! Poor Claire doesn't even understand what's going on and now has to avoid being arrested.

Hannah: At least she knows more about the motivations of these masked jerks who have been following her. I particularly enjoyed drawing them from the outside perspective standing over the trap door, showing that all hope of an exit for Claire and Atticus is gone. Mwahahaha!

Kailey: That's my favorite panel. Such a cool angle. I also love how Atticus jumps into action and information gathering. It was hard playing a confused Claire in this scene, when I wrote her plot for her. I wrote for the EITF more in this scene so I could finally explain things.

Hannah: Atticus is happy to finally get answers too, even though you can't tell because he's on the verge of passing out again. I can't wait to continue this scene and give more answers in the coming pages!

We've been waiting to do this reveal for so long! When Kailey first dropped this plot twist in the original rp, I freaked out in the best way.

Kailey: Hey, that's my mic drop! drops mic as well Nah, it's shared now with your epic comic rendition of this iconic scene. Atticus was so hesitant in the original story, took him forever to show Claire the death certificate. Glad the rewrite for the comic jumps to the point quicker.

Hannah: Yeah, and it fits the characters' personalities way better too. It was a ton of work editing and making the typed pages, but I'm happy with how much information we were able to fit!

Kailey: Now for our poor characters to try and make sense of all of it while the door is being broken down! Love this arc of the story and it's so satisfying to be here!

Kailey: The stakes are high and the search begins! The lab has been out of commission for a while, but it's sure crowded with junk. Probably illegal junk.

Hannah: These secret labs are always terribly organized, its shocking. Atticus would probably want to organize it if there wasn't a clock ticking away in the background in the form of that torch cutting through the bolts of the trap door.

Kailey: If there wasn't a clock ticking, Atticus would probably live there for a few days just to study. Hopefully he has some intense speed reading skills after passing out.

Hannah: It's a battle between him being able to focus enough on reading to figure out this mystery with Claire, or passing out under the pressure of impending doom again.

Hannah: I went all in on the dramatic angles on this page, and I'm so happy with how it turned out!

Kailey: It's very fitting to have dramatic angles with a dramatic scene. I'm amazed Claire and Atticus went into this situation not expecting the adrenaline to shut him down again. So scary!

Hannah: Originally, Atticus passed out at the top of the stairs, then his limp unconscious body basically fell onto Claire. But when we adapted the scene for the comic we figured they both have enough trauma to deal with right now without adding a head injury to the mix.

Kailey: Oh, gosh, yeah. Claire had to give up part of her dress to stop the bleeding. I'm glad we changed it so it's actually more plausible that they get through this. They have enough on their plate, and more incoming!

Kailey: Makes sense he can't open an alchemic door that's not in his house. Or just anyone could break into his lab back home. I like that we added the detail that Claire needed to do it. That wasn't in the original story. Atticus just opened it.

Hannah: I'll take the opportunity to explain how alchemy works any chance I get, and so will Atticus. ;P

Kailey: Haha, it's nice seeing him explain it so calmly. When he's not being challenged about alchemy, he's a really good teacher ❤️

Kailey: Haha. What's sus is how they ended up looking like they're going to prom together. I remember we went in blind on what outfits they would be wearing in the original rp, and they wonderfully collaborated.

Hannah: I was looking back at previous pages, and Claire and Atticus haven't been in the same scene since last November! Its only been half a day for them, but that's relative comic time for ya.

August Q&A

Big question gets a big answer! There's so much that goes on during the festival that doesn't get a highlight in the comic, but we couldn't fit it all! So, we opted to go with our character's opinions on the event. Obviously, Claire is the bigger fan of the festivities. The things that go on during the Festival of the New Age are all right up her alley. Probably because it was a fellow mechanical engineer, Timothy Garlant, who founded it.

Hannah: I'm ridiculously proud of the cars on this page. I was able to avoid drawing the garage full of cars on the way into Atticus's lab, but its kind of hard to avoid it when they need to get into one.

Kailey: Their friendship is palpable on this page, and I love the little calls to Atticus' developing relationship with Claire. Hope to get them both on screen together again soon.

Hannah: Yes, me too! This is the last page of this scene, so we're one scene closer to their reunion.

Kailey: I'm excited to get back to Claire and her side of the story with the next page!

Kailey: That is one intense brace. So cool that he's made these things, and it's so sweet to see Jack help him with it.

Hannah: I realized that I'd only shown incomplete portions of it previously, so I wanted to take this opportunity to show off the whole thing while Atticus is wearing it.

Kailey: You even made it glow through the shirt! Such a neat detail!

Hannah: Thanks! He can only do so much to hide the brace, like wear dark colors and multiple layers of clothes, but Alchemy is shiny. He hasn't been in any dark locations until now without his jacket so I thought it would be cool to include the glow.

Hannah: I tried some new art techniques with this page and the last- motion blur, and depth of field with the 'camera'. Panel two is my favorite.

Kailey: My favorite panels are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So many smolders... How can you choose? Haha, but really, I love seeing the friendship between these two, and Jack's ability to give Atticus confidence.

Hannah: He's a master of pep talks!

Hannah: The princess carry was way harder to draw than I thought, haha, though I wouldn't dream of changing that part of this scene. Also, I firmly believe that friends should tease each other mercilessly, and I enjoyed showing that aspect of Jack and Atticus's relationship on this page.

Kailey: This scene seriously sold me on Jack. I didn't really get to know him until this point, and it was beautiful. And sorry, Atticus, but it's totally a lair.

Kailey: We're back! Thanks for your patience while we took a much needed break. And we return with Atticus' side of the story! A much different experience parallel to Claire's.

Hannah: As we return to Atticus's perspective, we also get to see Jack again, who had a cameo at the airport on page 57. I'm so excited for this next scene! I know I say that with pretty much every scene, but its still true.

Kailey: Jack is a blast. I feel now he finally gets his chance to shine as Atticus' best friend. A good blend of humor, and sympathy, but never a total pity party. I remember when you wrote this scene for the first time in the rp, I was blown away. A serious landmark to reach it.

Hannah: It was a fun scene to write, and I love showing their bromance in comic form too.

Hannah: Such a long time passes between complicated city shots that I forget how long it takes to do them. But it was worth it to properly represent the backdrop for this conversation!

Kailey: I did say 'Sorry, Hannah!' When I wrote it in the script, but you went all out! It's impressive!

Hannah: No regrets. It would have been a crime to pass up the chance to show off the grand cityscape of New Reidle, as well as Mr. Garlant's magnificent hat hair.

Kailey: I picture he's the type where it's just not worth combing it and making it nice. Always in the air, a mechanic in a shop... His wife just throws a hat on it and calls it good for the public appearances.

We will be going on a break in order to prepare for the next part of the chapter and see what Atticus is up to, so stay tuned! Kailey: Seriously, just a bunch of dreams coming true for Claire. It's hard to believe, but no, she's actually never been on an airship in flight before considering her absolute love for them.

Hannah: And considering that her dad was a pilot.

Kailey: A very busy one. He was like the equivalent of like, a bus driver. Commercial flights, and Claire busy with her apprenticeship and staying back with her mother. She almost got a chance on her birthday, if we want to bring that up again.

Hannah: We debated whether or not to include Jack's cameo on this page, and I'm so glad it made it to the final cut.

Kailey: I think it's good to have a little reminder of the other characters of the story. Always fun to see what they're up to. We knew Jack had to be at the big speech at the airport about the races. Paying attention to it is a different matter.

Hannah: Jack's got other priorities. But enough about that handsome devil- how about that architecture, eh? I had fun drawing the back of the airport. Figuring out how to do afternoon light was less fun, but I think I did alright. Its a learning experience with every page.

Kailey: It's epic!!! Always a dream come true seeing these locations and characters come to life through your art. Thanks again for your amazing work and effort.

Kailey: I have to say, I love the little details you put in to have Garlant's speaker bird to mimic his emotions through its actions. How it's bowing down to his wife is the cutest thing ever!

Hannah: Like: Behold, my wife! Gotta show what a doting husband he is.

Kailey: I love it! The Garlant's are a serous power couple. Claire is meeting some very famous people, one even being her idol. It just makes me happy to see her getting cheered up after all that turmoil.

Hannah: Cheered up, or just dazed...I added the detail of her touching her own cheek to make sure that this is real.

Kailey: He's finally here!! I'm trying not to just overreact and cover this blurb in fangirl screams!

Hannah: You should. I've been hearing the screaming for years, its time to share it with the readers. At last, the appearance of the eccentric billionaire himself!

Kailey: We've been hinting at him since the beginning, and hiding him in backgrounds. It's been soooo hard to stay quiet about it! Tim is such a special character to me, and it's an honor to have him a part of this story and see him come to life visually.

Hannah: My love for Mr. Garlant can't hold a candle to Kailey's, but I've been super excited about this new character introduction too! For those who are curious, Tim's first appearance was way back on page 26 at the Sponsor's Social, and most recently he appeared on page 50, giving a speech to the crowd outside the airport while Claire snuck past.

Kailey: Plus his name and brand riddled about everything else. He's an important part of the going-ons and Claire getting to meet him is so satisfying.

Hannah: Flashback time!

Kailey: I love that it's in sepia like the photo! This scene is completely new for the comic. Originally, Claire just told the story much much later in the book.

Hannah: We felt that showing a memory of her parents would fit well at this point in the story, and fits the comic medium much better than her just talking about it.

Kailey: I love Garrett and Lillian and their relationship with Claire. It's been fun clarifying an important moment in Claire's life, and giving a chance for her parents to shine.

Kailey: We're back! And with such an epic page! So excited to continue the story, and we've made it to page 50! Wow!

Hannah: And with the new chapter comes a new location: the New Reidle Airport! I may have gone overboard with the crowds... but no regrets!

Kailey: The crowds were certainly tough on this page, but necessary atmosphere for the important speakers. You can even spy a small cameo from Thaddeus Falke himself in the background!

Hannah: If it had been Thaddeus's turn to give a speech, I could have done those squiggly lines a lot more when Claire zones out. He's not good at interesting speeches, and she's got more important things on her mind... So excited for this chapter!

Hannah: Claire and Atticus's argument from last week's page has finally reached its breaking point! I had fun with the lighting on this page, as well as the drama.

Kailey: I love the dynamic angles you arranged for it. This page has less dialogue, but the scenes and actions taken really speak volumes. Poor Atticus. Poor Claire. Things are just too confusing right now.

Hannah: I think my favorite panel is number 4, with the light shining through the open door as Claire rushes out, Atticus reaching desperately after her... It was a fun page!

Hannah: I think Claire's held it together pretty well, considering what's happened to her over the past 24 hours! Atticus gets to be the lucky one to deal with her pent up frustration.

Kailey: She was caught up in the mystery, but now that her family is being questioned for what sounds like illegal activity, her skeptical side is catching up. I'm just going to miss that jacket... She was rocking it.

Hannah: On this page, we actually get to see the part of the underground warehouse that Atticus uses as his lab. Its mostly cabinets, but trust me, there's some really cool alchemy stuff inside that I didn't want to draw. I can draw only so many glass containers before I go insane.

Kailey: That's how Atticus describes it too: Really Cool Alchemy Stuff. I love how his paper to draw transmutation circles on is the size of drafting paper. He is very organized, that's why it's so clean and you don't have to draw it all.

Hannah: Atticus doesn't describe it that way :P. But yeah, its a very tidy workspace. Honestly I wouldn't mind a place that size for my art stuff.

Kailey: Well, whatever he calls it, Claire certainly doesn't like it associated with her family.

We will be taking a short break to prepare for the finale of chapter 2. We tried our best not to let outside influence affect our workflow, but we came to a rough spot and feel it would be best to catch up, take care of some things, and put our full and best effort into the page. Kailey: Flying solo on this one. Feels like the earlier pages of the comic before we switched to the conversation format. Hannah only had one thing to say about this page, and you can refer to the comments section to read it. All right, here I go:

If anyone didn't think Atticus was loaded with cash before, this will certainly convince them. Guys got money to burn on his alchemy experiments. In the original rp, it was like he was revealing his personal bat cave, and Hannah declared it as her 'mic-drop' moment. It was certainly impressive, but Atticus immediately switched gears, closed the doors, and they went to his room instead because he was too weak at the time to show it off! This section was the biggest part of the rewrite for us so far, and we are so happy they are actually going to explore the underground lab this time instead of just reveal it, then close the door. The end of chapter 2 is approaching, and I can't express how hype I am to get into the story after this! The mystery is just barely unfolding!

Hannah: Claire, on the other hand, regrets nothing. I had a ton of fun drawing this page, not only for the silliness of the crazy motorcycle ride, but getting to show off the bird's eye view of New Reidle.

Kailey: You did such an amazing job! Way better than the crude MS Paint oval I filled out for reference at the beginning. It's surreal to see our city come alive this way.

Hannah: It was a fun panel! I only regretted starting like twice during the two and a half hours I spent doing tiny squares. :P

The MS Paint map was very handy as a reference!

Hannah: We're back from our one week break, and ready to get this chapter's finale going!

Ah, the awkward is just so palpable on this page. I love it.

Kailey: Claire doesn't feel it. Just Atticus. She's just raring to go! My favorite is the last panel, her face is perfect.

Hannah: Panel 3 is my personal favorite; Atticus doing the classic gentleman move of giving his jacket to a lady. In this case its for a disguise, not to keep her warm, but tomato tomahto.

Kailey: And he compliments her hair... Even though it's obviously a rat's nest at this point. Very subtle ;)

Kailey: I love all the expressions on this page, so cute! The last one with Claire definitely says to me: 'Well, too bad that you're sick, but I'm totally going to get to drive this!'

Hannah: Claire's always one to focus on the positive, while Atticus is still stuck in his head processing what just happened. On this page I noticed exactly how much he rambles, though I didn't realize it when we wrote the original. laughs nervously

Kailey: We'll find the best way to fit his ramblings and not take over an entire page of the comic in his dialogue alone, ha ha. I think we've done a good job so far.

Hannah: I think so too! Next week will have a lot less talking, I promise. It's hard to have a conversation on a motorcycle. ;)

Kailey: I believe that was literally the dialogue in the original concept art of the scene, haha. This scene was impactful in the original story, but is even better now that we understand how we built the world and have an end goal in mind.

Hannah: There are so many bits of new information in this conversation that Atticus doesn't know which one to focus on. I had a ton of fun drawing his expression moving from concern, to shock, and finally to a bewildered acceptance that he has no idea how to react to this girl and her insane story.

Kailey: Claire's a bit of a scatterbrain, but her care for others comes first. She had to make sure to give her gift to Atticus before getting too deep in the conversation. It was fun that you drew her buying it on the festival montage page in Chapter 1!

Hannah: Yep! You may notice the bag is a lot smaller on this page. My explanation is that she bought other stuff besides hinges from that vendor, but its actually because I didn't really think it through. I can't help giggling as I picture this scene if she just gave him the original size of bag. Whump 'Here ya go, I got you a present!' 'H-how many hinges did you buy?!'

Kailey: I wouldn't put it past Claire to do that, honestly... Excited to see how Atticus reacts to the alchemy note she brought along! She had Atticus on the mind: For Science!

Hannah: At last, we return to see the aftermath of the fire at Lockhart Mechanics. I've gotta say, I wouldn't handle finding people picking through the rubble of my childhood home nearly as well as Claire does.

Kailey: She's very much a 'take things as they come' kind of person. No, she's not happy about it, but she doesn't want to get risked being seen by people who tried to kidnap her the previous night. I love sneaky Claire.

Hannah: And I love this goblin fire chief. I usually have fun drawing side characters, and his personality made doing his expressions even more entertaining. Its the 'I just want to go home and shave' face.

Kailey: Poor guy's been there since the fire last night, and these dumb government officials took over the area. At least Claire has a backup plan: Time to go meet up with her rich new friend!

Hannah: And proper security measures in place for how to store them- a secret compartment in the bottom of his desk drawer. Atticus is just that extra, but he'd probably say it pays to be careful.

Kailey: Well, with how he's acting, he seems pretty nervous if one of them were to be found or fall into the wrong hands. Nice of Corde to go out and look for him so he doesn't miss his hot date.

Hannah: 'It's not a date!' Sure, Atticus, sure. ;)

Hannah: Another day, another panic attack. Just a normal occurrence in the life of Atticus Falke. The jolly Mr. Corde returns on this page too, and I remembered how much I love drawing fluffy facial hair.

Kailey: Poor Atticus! Luckily, he has another one of our friendly uncle figures to help calm him down. But, come on, what's there to worry about? It's not like alchemy is considered a devil practice or anything ;)

Hannah: It'll be fiiiine. This is another scene which was added for the comic version, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I wanted to show more of Corde and Atticus's relationship, which happened off screen in our original RP.

Kailey: I'm really glad we're giving Corde some screen time in the comic. It's nice that the webcomic is giving us a chance to spruce up the original story now that we understand the plot a lot better. Since we wrote everything on the fly, we couldn't be as detailed before.

Hannah: Plot!

Kailey: Plot indeed! I love this page: It's almost like introducing a new character with something so important coming to the forefront. Time to show off all the little hints we've been setting up since the beginning. I'm so excited!

Hannah: It seemed some people had forgotten about the meeting where Claire promised to meet Atticus to pay him back for his intervention with Jerk Elf (tm) on page 16, but that plot point is becoming crucial. Never fear, our protagonists will meet again!

Kailey: And hopefully, Atticus can make sense of the horrible handwriting on that paper. It was an intentional choice to make it look messy, the author has terrible handwriting, but if readers can interpret any of it beforehand, it'll be a fun tease of things to come.

Kailey: Page 30! A fun landmark to start the next day of the festival to!

Hannah: This is a page full of mystery, suspense, and- nah, just kidding, there's just breakfast food. Maybe some glass shards, too. Claire really shouldn't have slept with that picture, but I wouldn't have tried to convince her to let go of it, either.

Kailey: I was originally going to have her get cut with it and that lead to Joson taking it to replace the frame, but decided to instead exchange it for that sweet, sweet breakfast food. He's best psuedo uncle, letting Claire crash in his kitchen.

Hannah: Joson is really fun to draw, too! I love his grumpy face. It feels good to get back to Claire and see what she's up to.

Kailey: Feels like a fresh start after a crazy and dramatic night, with a little continuation of the mystery at the end of the page.

Hannah: And with that, the first day of the Festival ends; with both of our protagonists fading to unconsciousness. They've both had some dramatic experiences, to say the least.

Kailey: I am really excited to ramp up the plot in the following day of the festival, but it's also really cool that we got some snippets of it here. The first day is just a bunch of signs and build up for what's to come.

Hannah: Yeah, I can't wait to show off what we've been building up to! As for this page, the first panel is probably on my top five favorite panels. Conveying Atticus's panicked state through the visuals was really challenging, but well worth all the tweaking of the speech bubbles and different elements. Plus, we get to see Claire again! I've missed her.

Kailey: I agree with the thoughts on the first panel. It took a lot of effort and build up to properly convey Atticus' condition, and I think we did a good job. I also love seeing Jack again. I love the care he shows his friend. I imagine that long line of ladies meant nothing when he heard Atticus had fallen down. It's also very sweet how Joson is taking care of Claire. They both have good people in their lives.

Hannah: Well, Atticus is really displeased by it. For the second time today, he's found himself sprawled on the ground.

Kailey: He has a habit of doing that. Can't blame him though, he doesn't have the strength to really hold himself up that well. Poor guy keeps getting caught up in these situations.

Hannah: But this time, there isn't a helpful mechanic around. There's only a scheming cousin, fancily dressed partygoers, and the aforementioned reptilian lapdog. Her name is Daisy, in case anyone was wondering.

Kailey: I'm sure Daisy meant no harm. It's hard to resist fancy party snacks. Too bad she caught Jasper's eye as a method to sabotage his cousin.

Hannah: Freaking Jasper...I love his character design, but he needs to go sober up. We'll see you next week as this ill-fated party scene comes to an end!

Hannah: Atticus is a perfect gentleman... until you start bad-mouthing his hobby. Can you really blame him? Most people's reactions are shown in panel two; scorn, suspicion, and outright fear.

Kailey: And this page has the debut of another main character of this story: Atticus' lecturing face.

Hannah: At first I was worried that I made it too intense, but then I decided- nah. Atticus shares his dad's reputation of being a stick in the mud for a reason. Why go to parties when you can do SCIENCE?

Kailey: I think it shows that Atticus had heard these kinds of accusations before and has had to defend himself so much that he now gets annoyed about it easily. I imagine it's judged even harsher since he's nobility.

Hannah: Indeed! Everyone's got a sore spot. I also love that Jasper's plan worked perfectly, and also didn't. If I were one of those women I would have left, too.

Kailey: Ah, the sponsor's social. This scene wasn't included in the original story at all, and Hannah did a great job putting the scene together to give Atticus some more depth and screen time exclusive to the webcomic.

Hannah: On this page, my goal was to present a snapshot of the high society of New Reidle and the type of people Atticus deals with when he goes out. Namely his cousin Jasper, and some young ladies who seem to care more about his pedigree than him.

Kailey: Everyone who's anyone is at this party to kick of the festival of the new age, including eleven named characters. I love me some cameos. It's no surprise that Atticus rarely attends, must be hard when girls only want to talk to you because you have a wealthy inheritance and are known to be ill.

Hannah: He just wants to talk to his friend, dangit!

Kailey: His friend is popular. You think Atticus is attracting the ladies, just imagine the line trying to talk to Jack after that win at the races.

Hannah: Social difficulties aside, it was a blast to draw and color all the fancy outfits on this page. And by that I mean that Kailey has started naming the trim layer things like 'all dat trim' and 'all hail the glorious trim'. I hope you enjoy reading this page as much as we enjoyed making it!

Hannah: This page ended up with quite a few more panels than we originally pictured, but I couldn't resist! We only get a small glimpse of her house as she rushes into the inferno, and I thought it would be cool to show her idea wall before it was, ya know, disintegrated. I think it shows a lot about Claire's character that she's not there to save her blueprints from the flames, but a family picture.

Kailey: It's certainly reckless, but as I played Claire, I envisioned her with a determination of steel. She wouldn't let something so precious go. Luckily, she has a good friend in Joson to take care of her in the time of loss.

Hannah: Everybody needs a Joson in their lives. He's gruff, but he's really a big softie. Don't tell the other gruff dwarves, it could ruin his reputation.

Kailey: His accent is a fun nod to the fact that there are other countries and locations outside this city. But, man, was it a pain to write for. I couldn't remember it half the time, and sometimes I just gave up.

Hannah: He's been living in Cleyria for a while, though, so I think it makes sense that his accent isn't as obvious sometimes.

Kailey: Anyway, the page turned out gorgeous and was worth the extra work beyond what we planned. But, I wonder what Atticus has been up to the entire time...

Probably just went to bed.

Kailey: So hype to be back for Chapter 2!

Hannah: We're picking up right where we left off on our cliffhanger last chapter, with Lockhart Mechanics up in flames. My favorite part about this page is definitely the warm lighting of the inferno, though I do feel bad about Claire's house being the fuel.

Kailey: Once again, I take full blame. Love me some drama. We also get introduced to one of her story's characters: Joson Silverbuster. Though, I never decided how to actually pronounce his name. It's either joe-son, or jaw-son.

Hannah: I prefer Joe-son, but Kailey switches every time she says it out loud. Shall we put it to a vote?

Kailey: Either way, I'm excited to be back and really get into the heat of the story. So is Claire, apparently.

CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 is coming! We are excited to continue the exciting events in the story and reveal more of the main plot. First page will be released Tuesday, May 26th. In the meantime, hopefully the art on this cover page can give you little clues of what's to come.

New Character Concepts and Announcements

It's announcement time! We have some exciting news and updates to share as we head to the end of our page hiatus! First things first: we present our new full body character concepts. They are much improved from our original concept designs and now better reflect the style of the comic. Why did we make these? That's what our next announcement is about:

We are currently looking into finding an online publisher. This endeavor will hopefully spread our comic further, find new fans, and help us broaden our audience and following. We want to give a big thank you to our early ambassador fans and hope you will continue to support the comic as we head into this big new step!

Along with finding a publisher, we have decided to launch an updated website that will be live next week along with the Chapter 2 cover page! We hope you like the incoming changes and we feel they will better reflect the comic’s evolving style, as well as make the reading and browsing experience smoother.

Stay tuned! Cover page reveal next week with new website, and then on May 26th, Chapter 2 begins!

From RP to Webcomic

When we finished the story, we knew it was one worth telling, but coming up with the right medium took some time, and eventually we settled that it deserved the visual medium of a webcomic. However, converting what was such a personal experience into panels and artwork sometimes loses little details that made a scene special. We have to be careful in deciding what needs to be cut, what needs to be resorted to background details, and how to interpret a scene so the same message comes across.

This week, we wanted to show a bit of that process by giving a peek to some of the original text that went into making the webcomic. We take these paragraphs that were originally back and forth between two writers, convert them into scripts, keeping, cutting, and sometimes rewriting the content to better fit the more developed narrative, then they are divided into panels and pages for artwork. It is really satisfying to bring even the littlest of scenes from the story to life through a webcomic.

Fan Request Sketch

A while back we had a raffle for anyone who commented on the website to have a chance at a fan request of art for the For Tomorrow comic. Our winner had a wonderful request asking what Claire's design of an airship would look like, and getting a chance to show it off to Atticus. Hannah put together this beautiful sketch of a segment of Claire's own workshop desk, sprawled with her inventions, ideas, blueprints, as well as memorabilia for inspiration. This desk would most likely be in her room, which is burned down at the end of Chapter 1, so in reality, all of this work has been lost to the flames. This fan art request gives us a chance to see what could have been if Atticus had a chance to visit her house before the unfortunate events that befell it.

Hannah: I've never felt so sad, yet so gleeful to finish a page.

Kailey: Sorry I made you draw Claire's house burning down, but I have to say how satisfying it is to see something we wrote put into such an amazing visual format.

Hannah: Thanks! I'm very happy with the result. It took some hard work and research to get this page right, especially the light from the fire in the final panel. I would apologize for the emotional trauma we are putting our readers through right now by leaving them with this page, except that the rest of the story wouldn't happen without this event. So sorry, not sorry!

Kailey: Technically, the trauma is my fault for now, so I'll take the blame, but I'm also not sorry. It's an amazing story, and like you said, this sets up the scene for a great adventure to come in the following days of the festival. Also excited to see Atticus at a social event in the coming Chapter Two.

We will be taking a break for a month in order to prepare for the release of chapter two, but that doesn't mean we're going silent! Kailey: Ding-ding!

Hannah: Who is it? Oh, wait, that's not how that joke goes.

I think this page holds a record for number of cars, but that's what happens in the thick of festival traffic.

Kailey: I love them. I know they were a pain to draw and color, but the amount just gives you that essence and feel of late night traffic after a sporting event along with the amount of background characters. (Personally, I'm a fan of the elf in the newsie cap)

Hannah: I love it too! My favorite part about this page was the lighting, especially in panel three. Storywise, it's always fun to see where Atticus and Claire's stories converge; in this page it's both of them traveling home, but with dramatically different attitudes.

Kailey: When I originally wrote this scene, I actually wanted to have her kidnapped successfully. However, this was a roleplay game, so I let the dice rolls determine Claire's fate, and as you can see, they were very much in her favor. Though, she's not to be underestimated either. She's a mechanic and has some tricks up her sleeve. Or, boot, in this case.

Hannah: I should have known you wanted her to fail... and you say I'm the supervillain. As for my part in this scene, Atticus was calmly making his way back out of the stands, so I was just screaming in the general chat as I watched the drama playing out with Claire's would-be kidnappers, unable to affect the outcome with my character. Roleplaying is fun!

Kailey: I never said you were a supervillain. That was self declared.

Hannah: Fair. But I can't hold a candle to your scheming. That's the main requirement of a villain.

Kailey: Anyway, yes, originally Atticus didn't really do much. We added and rewrote the most for him for this first evening in the story. However, there was no car hijacking in the original. We had to change the location of the airship track, and Hannah came up with the idea to show off more of Claire's escape.

Hannah: This is one of the first full page action scenes I've ever drawn, and the end result of all our editing makes me proud. Claire is a badass, and I've been giddily waiting to show it off since we started the comic.

Hannah: What a crazy page! Tilting the rows creates some unique panel shapes, and each panel has a lot going on by itself; from shots of the race itself, to the reactions of our mains characters. It all works together to create an energetic feel as the long awaited airship race takes place! It was a ton of work to do all the airships on this page, but I'm happy with the result.

Kailey: I thought we were going to avoid drawing the airship race, because of how much detail it would take, including rewriting the story/script so that Claire was kidnapped during the race instead, but it just ended up making more sense to keep it the way it was.

Can't help but feel like Atticus is directing his comment in the second-to-last panel towards me though...

Hannah: Well, you do like to add drama. His smug expression in that panel turned out a bit ominous because of the lighting, but I can't say I dislike it.

Kailey: I do like to add drama. It was at this point in the original story that I felt it was time to get some action going. And well, Claire was my character, so that's where I had the control. Poor girl. Also, I enjoyed playing the announcers for the majority of For Tomorrow, and I can't help but read their lines in an over-enthusiastic voice.

We're trying out a new way to share our page blurb today: Us actually conversing about our thoughts. Let us know if you like it! We think it adds more of our personality and comraderie as co-authors.

Kailey: An introduction of some new characters, mainly the parents of our male leads, but also some mysterious masked people that seem to be targeting Claire. Very ominous, and I love the lighting that sets the scene up that stuff is about to go down. I also love Rosa's expressions, really showing the relation to Jack and his extreme expressions from his introduction to the comic. It's also very apparent that Atticus gets his appearance from his mother, Victoria.

We also get some views of the other racing airships other than the Falke. Cool to see them from concept sketches, to full colored design.

Hannah: Yes... those ships... The ones visible in panel five are by far the most normal of the designs I came up with, but we'll get to see some crazier ones in the coming pages. Turns out its really hard to come up with new technology with no knowledge of flight mechanics or propulsion. Oh well!

I loved drawing the parents of Jack and Atticus. I'd also add that Atticus takes after his father quite a bit as well. Low brows, straight nose, and the intense expression that often gets them both pegged as stiffs.

Kailey: Because they are.

Hannah: Hey! Atticus is just really, really tired.

We experimented more with our coloring techniques on this page and it was the perfect page to do so in order to show the passage of time. This is a fun page that helps us have a timeskip as well as get some worldbuilding in. It's also fun to see how our two mains spend the rest of their day. Very different lifestyles.

We also have a fun cameo from one of Hannah's DnD characters: Milo Greenhand, an artificer with rocket boots, whom we know would adore this world, so we snuck him in for fun. There's other cameos scattered throughout the page as well. Atticus seems amused by his and Jack's conversation in the first panel, but Kailey can't figure out what they could possibly be talking about since Jack is making quite the gesture. Since Jack is Hannah's character, she says she'll take what their conversation is about to her grave.

This is also kind of like a page of fanart for ourselves, getting so many smaller pieces of the characters in different situations. It helps us even understand our characters and world more, which is good since things are going to ramp up very, very soon.

That pretty much wraps up our introduction of the setting. Very excited for what’s to come and the plot is going to come into full swing before the end of chapter one. This page mainly sets up that Claire and Atticus plan to meet again, but will continue their normal lives in the meantime. At least, so they think...

Hannah experimented with more shading in the background to make it look a bit more distant using blue hues. It’s more steps to add to the quality of the product, so it’ll be fun to see where we go and expand our style. She also says she will never draw a character from that angle Jack is in on panel six, claiming it took her several attempts just to get the face right. Personally, that turned out to be my favorite panel, so hopefully I can resist asking for more dramatic angles like that. Also, we both enjoy the final two panels and Jack’s presence in them. It’s a small spark of his true personality as an older brother figure to Atticus, and his natural habitat: teasing him. While landing, Jack witnessed the entire exchange of Atticus tripping to the ground and that is what he is referencing.

Oh, the return of the aptly named: Jerk Elf Guy. And, a conclusion of a short arc in the story. Poor old man had been trying to track Claire down all morning since she knocked him over, looking for justice and repayment. The factories are also busy in the background now, it being nearly noon. Might be a festival day, but you gotta keep the work going.

We know it’s been a long build up, but this story takes place over the course of a five day festival, and this is only day one. Honestly, we’re thankful the first day is so chill, because it’s a rollercoaster after this. However, this small moment of Atticus paying off Claire’s debt, sets up an incredibly important story point down the line, so we’re happy to have reached it.

And a little secret: We have no idea what the man’s trinket is or even does. Neither does he, but he sure thinks it’s worth all that money. Essentially, a play on the fable of The King’s New Clothes.

We get to see the sunlight and open field again! Love the contrast of settings and colors on this page. Some backstory revealed on this page too. It’s hard for Claire not to be associated with the captain and pilot who died in the Saint Deltruse accident, and her memory shows us that she was even there that day to see it. There’s going to be more flashbacks in the future, and putting them in a sepia tone is a fun way we connect with the time and technology era we’re going for. Jack is strangely dismissive of such a sensitive topic...

We adore the range of facial expressions on this page, especially Atticus. He doesn’t exactly know what happened in the engine room, but you can see he just expects the worst and has to bite his tongue when it comes to lecturing his friend out in public. And to top it off, Claire is called out as a ruffian, yet again...

The contrast of blue lighting of the open door breaking up the warm red of the engine is one of our favorite parts of this page. And, with that cold light enters Atticus, thoroughly douses any chance of a steamy scene happening in the engine room.

Drawing the facial expressions and interactions between our three main cast is always a joy, and on this page particularly, Claire’s utter obliviousness to Jack’s advances was especially entertaining to portray. We have an alternate version of this scene where Jack does get the kiss. Along with it, he gets a screwdriver to the side. Claire wouldn’t get taken advantage of that easily.

The second half of this page is also fun, because it gets a taste of how these three would actually hang out in more casual circumstances, with Jack being a total tease and enjoying every minute of Atticus and Claire’s awkward introductions.

This week, we will be holding a raffle! We really want our community to have a place to come together. We know, unsettling cliffhanger, but remember that Jack is one of our favorite characters for a reason. We've had our time to set up the carefree world-building, but this comic will tackle our characters faults along with their growth. We wouldn't have Jack's introduction any other way.

This page features the faithful crew of the Griffin’s Pride, all personally scouted and hired by Jack. The trio of bosun mates take care of maintenance and landing procedures, and the engineer works in the heat of the boiler in the back. When we first wrote the book, these crew members were all faceless and nameless, but as we dove more into the story, were able to give them distinct personalities and love them as much as any main cast member. It was fun drawing the crew’s reaction to this unknown woman dashing onto their ship, but it’s not anything they aren’t used to with a captain like Jack, who often gives “tours” to his rabid fanbase.

It was an added challenge to do the lighting in the engine room, but we’re proud of the distinct heat the illumination the furnace gives off as well as provide lighting for the scene.

Jack Renee is another important character to the plot of For Tomorrow. He's famous, attractive, and a little full of himself, but has a heart of gold when it comes to his best friend, Atticus Falke. The two of them grew up together and often consider each other as brothers. Eventually, Jack became a pilot of a racing airship, the Griffin's Pride, and he hasn't lost a race since.

Jack was conceptualized right alongside Atticus. A pensive shut-in like Atticus needed an outgoing and socialite personality to go alongside him. It’s thanks to Jack that Atticus gets out at all, his friend often dragging him outside for all sorts of shenanigans and adventures to make sure the young noble is reminded what daylight looks like.

The comic feels a little more alive now that such an important character is being introduced. Jack is another main character in our story and he is properly featured on the cast page along with Claire and Atticus. Hannah also greatly enjoys drawing Jack, is addicted to it probably, and we’ll be able to release a lot of fun concept art of him on our patreon in the future.

We’re already starting to see our comic evolving. Aside from new character introductions that we are very excited to add to our cast page for the next page, Hannah has been experimenting with a new coloring technique that adds an extra gradient layer to bring more depth to the shadows. We hope to always be improving our quality and can only imagine what this comic could look like in a few months or a year, if we get that far.

We also like how this page shows off our two main character's different personalities in a way. Atticus tends to have more thought bubbles, because if Claire is thinking something, she usually just says it aloud. Also, Atticus is basically in the same pose for the majority of panels and is generally more composed, while Claire demonstrates more movement and expression in her posing. Hannah does a spectacular job bringing these characters to life.

Atticus’ gentlemanly manners aren’t taken as well as he hoped they’d be. Luckily, he’s well trained in polite expressions, so it can be hard to tell how much he’s actually panicking inside, listing excuses in his head as to why she’s ‘offended’ in his terms. Atticus can come off a bit rude, assuming so quickly that Claire being from the east side of the city and not accustomed to the manners of nobility, but really, it’s just Claire he’s dealing with. Though, mannerisms and ways of speaking do have differences between the East and West sides of the city, with the West Side taking an approach from our Victorian Era, and the East side being a bit more loose and progressive.

At last, our main characters are talking to each other! In the original story, the sound of the propellers was too loud for them to hear each other. There was a lot of 'What did you say?' and communicating through gestures. In this comic version we tried using the 'Whp whp' sounds effects to cover up parts of the speech bubbles to get this effect, but it became too distracting so we switched them to an ambient background effect. Just picture them talking loudly over the noise, and you get the idea. All the expressions on this page were immensely fun to draw as well as further showing the personalities of Claire and Atticus.

In this world, Alchemy is known to exist, but it’s rare to be practiced and more of a taboo than completely illegal. As a mechanic, Claire is naturally skeptical and wary, seeing as her profession typically stays clear of such shortcuts and she knows little about it. It’s nothing to report Atticus to the police for, though.

The hardest part of this page was coming up with the right progressive dialogue and sound effects to make the panels and the overall fall make sense. While comics are a great way to tell a story visually, there isn’t always enough room to fit all that inner monologue and description and it’s up to us to try and tell a good three chunks of written paragraphs in a visual format.

We love this page a lot because of Atticus’ posing and trying to show his more sarcastic, and dry sense of humour throughout his frustrations. It was very difficult to get Claire to look at him in the original roleplay game, as she was so focused on the airships she had raced to come and see, but it’s hard to ignore a nobleman flopping like a fish right underneath one of the most famous racing airships.

We’re back! And we’re so happy about the page we brought for our first post of the new year. It is so refreshing to finally see Atticus and Claire on the same page and we also made our panel widths thinner to fit more on a page. We really enjoy the new style.

For months, the elven man Claire runs into was named “Jerk Elf Guy”. Now, we had a disclaimer on a previous page that we’re not goblin racist, but… Well, we’re kind of elf racist. They’re the worst. (Just kidding of course, but it’s a running joke of ours to hate elves, and to play on that joke, Kailey made this guy an elf in the original story). Now, we can’t blame him entirely, Claire does tend to have laser focus on the things she wants, and it can get her into trouble sometimes. We don’t really show Atticus’ journey to the airfields, but he really doesn’t have much trouble or traffic to get through, so he arrives first to greet the Griffin’s Pride.

Originally, this page had the fleet of airships in formation high in the sky with tiny figures of our main characters opposite of each other across the river. We decided to add the close-ups on Atticus and Claire at the bottom to highlight their reactions of the airship flyover, and brought the airships themselves down lower to add a more dynamic angle and highlight the Falke family sponsored Griffin's Pride. We are really happy with this change and feel the page does a great job at bringing the pilot pages of the comic together to help introduce the story. We are really starting to figure out our style and how we want to organize this comic, and we are very excited to start diving into some story now that we've finished introducing the setting.

We will be taking a break on actual page releases until after New Year's. But! We still plan to have some fun holiday art and more to keep the website active during the break, so stay tuned. This will give us time to make a buffer of pages so that we can continue our regular page releases back starting on the 7th of January.

The return of Roy, the background character with way too much backstory for screen time. Apparantly, he's a crazy driver, to have reached the west side so quickly and through the busy crowds of the festival. Probably how he got the sidecar hitch broken in the first place? Also, we're not goblin racist! We promise! A disclaimer: Not all goblins are bad drivers or smelly.

So far, this page is the one that got the most reworking from thumbnail to final. We added some panels compared to our original plan to help accentuate the action, and give Atticus a chance at showing some of his more stubborn tendencies to cling to his dignity in spite of odd and ridiculous circumstances. We also wanted to show the passage of time, that Claire and Atticus are arriving at nearly the same time.

This page was a lot of fun to color. And by lot of fun, we mean Kailey used a random color generator because there was so much to decide on this page. However, it still was fun to hide some background characters that might show up later in the story in these crowds. It gives us a reference for who might live in this city and people we can reuse to show that they are doing their own activities in the background of Claire and Atticus' story. We also finally got the name drop of the actual city of New Reidle. The city is divided by a grand river that runs through it, with several bridges that can be lifted for the transport of barges and other large boats through the city.

Lush greenery, wider streets, clearer skies, the West Side is comfortable living where the wealthy of the city reside and we tried to show that off in this last panel. Also by this panel, Hannah started to feel more comfortable drawing these classic cars and added some finer details to them in comparison to the cars on an earlier page, in order to signify the wealth and higher brand. At this point, we also had realized that our earlier pages felt empty, and we wanted to make the East Side seem a bit louder and crowded, so we went back to the earlier pages and made some minor changes to help this page feel more quiet and substantial that way.

This was originally a manservant with no dialogue, but in order to help Atticus' introduction feel more alive, we chose to add an interaction with his personal prothstetics mechanic. It was nice to give him an interaction with another person this early, even though he typically leads a solitary lifestyle. His prothstetics were originally designed to be on the outside of his clothes, but as we developed our version of alchemy, it made more sense to have them against his skin and therefore hidden.

Claire's shop is on the East Side of New Reidle, the capital city of the country of Cleyria. The East side is mainly businesses and factories with the less desirable living, and we tried to show that in the colors and narrow streets. Fun fact about the barber's pole: Apparantly, they used to only consist of red stripes, but when they came to the United States of America, the U.S. citizens stuck blue on there to represent their country. Cleyria's colors are gold and red, so we signified that by replacing the blue stripe with a yellow one.

Introducing Claire Lockhart, a mechanic who lives and works on the East side of New Reidle. She built her workshop herself, renovating half of her house to be a garage, leaving little remaining as living space. This first page follows the introduction of the original story in that Claire was the first character to be introduced, and we kept it the same because we felt her shop and personality really helps set the scene for the world the best being a mechanic in a more industrial era. Also, the goblin's name is Roy and has an extensive backstory that Kailey wrote for him as soon as Hannah presented the page thumbnails for approval because she fell in love with him immediately.

CHAPTER 1

We had a long debate on whether our chapters should have subtitles or not. Maybe someday... For this one it could be 'The Festival' or 'The Mechanic and the Alchemist', but we decided to keep things plain and simple and just introduce the comic using imagery that would foreshadow events or specific character introductions. The art became our subtitle. Anyway, we are excited to be presenting the comic to you and hope you enjoy reading it from the start. Welcome to New Reidle, and the story of For Tomorrow!
